CARSON CITY — It probably comes as no surprise to many Nevada motorists that the state is ranked in the Top 10 as one of the most dangerous in which to drive.
Nevada rounded out the top 10 states for dangerous driving with 1.56 fatalities for every 100 million miles driven, according to the report by carinsurancecomparison.com.

Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday will begin operating the Heavenly Gondola seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for sightseeing, hiking and dining. The Tamarack Express Chairlift will also operate, accessing miles of hiking trails with the best views of Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY – A proposal seeking to implement a business profits tax in Nevada to support public education will be filed with the Secretary of State’s office on Wednesday.
Supported by the state teachers union and the AFL-CIO, if the groups can collect 72,352 signatures by November 13, the issue of taxes will be dumped squarely in the laps of state lawmakers in 2013.

Low pressure from the Pacific will combine with record high temperatures to produce thunderstorms over Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
This will result in isolated to scattered thunderstorms developing Friday afternoon and evening. Storms will initially develop over the eastern Sierra, northeast California, Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno areas Friday afternoon, then push toward Pyramid Lake and Highway 95 late Friday afternoon into Friday evening.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s taxable sales jumped 7.2 percent in March over March 2011, but the state’s two largest urban counties showed more sluggish growth, the state Department of Taxation reported Tuesday.
Taxable sales totaled $3.9 billion in March, driven by Nevada’s rural counties where large energy and mining projects helped boost the numbers overall. For the fiscal year to date, statewide taxable sales are up 7.5 percent.

Update 12:22PM: A small brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe is contained and burned about one-quarter of an acre, reports U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Forest Service brought the fire to containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Heck said. Initial reports that came in said the fire started as a backyard burn pile.

RENO — Nevada’s Drought Response Committee has announced all Nevada counties as being on either drought alert or drought watch with 11 counties classified by the U.S. Drought Monitor as under severe drought and six counties under moderate drought. The committee is organizing and activating three regional task forces to address the drought impacts in local and regional areas to begin gathering information about local plans, needs, vulnerabilities and available resources.

CARSON CITY — Sixty state lawmakers and legislative candidates who responded to a survey on government transparency largely favor new laws requiring the Legislature to follow the Open Meeting Law and mandating expanded reporting of spending on legislators by lobbyists.

Sunday, May 20 was a memorable day for two of our friends. The two friends are Stephanie Parker (our neighbor) and her brother George, who was visiting our area from Phoenix, Ariz.
Stephanie is fairly new to Carson City and to our neighborhood, having moved here from Las Vegas, where she lived and worked for many years.
When I first discovered that George would be visiting and that he is an ardent fisherman, I asked Stephanie (who also fishes) if the two of them would like to try Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.
Without hesitation, she said, “You bet. Yes, we would!”

CARSON CITY — While Mitt Romney and Barack Obama were campaigning elsewhere Tuesday, Nevada Democrats and Republicans took up the battle for the presidency on their behalf.
Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., held a telephone conference call to talk up Romney’s credentials as a “turnaround specialist” who will get the country back on track. He also criticized Obama for failing to get spending or the national deficit under control as he promised early on in his presidency.
