State Route 89 (Placer County): Work is set to resume on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

The Larch Avenue neighborhood's quite Tuesday evening was disrupted by what was described as a violent explosion caused by an illegal honey oil lab.

"My mother's floor rose and fell," said neighbor Daniel Castillo. His mother and sister live in the apartment above where the explosion occurred. Their apartment has a large crack above the front door. "My nephew was standing outside when it happened," Castillo continued. "He said the windows of the apartment came out like a balloon being blown up."

Two years ago, Travis Ganong contacted Daron Rahlves and asked for help.

Ganong, then 24, had long been considered a rising star in speed events (he won the downhill and super-G national titles in 2010), but he hadn't figured out how to translate his potential to World Cup results. This Halloween, police, sheriff and CHP Officers in El Dorado County will crack down on drunk and drugged drivers throughout the region with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort. The Avoid the 6 DUI Task Force has given a fair warning to all partygoers: keep the party off the road.

“The scariest part of Halloween is not the spooky costumes and scary pranks, it’s the impaired drivers. All too often, partygoers don’t plan ahead and choose to drive impaired, but a costume can’t disguise drunk driving,” said Press Information Officer Dave Stevenson.

Lake Tahoe’s new regional plan can be viewed many ways — an act of self-preservation, a pendulum swing in planning, a plea for private investment. But what it seeks to do is indisputable — to re-engineer Tahoe development into denser town centers with taller buildings and more coverage.
The policies and development incentives in the new Tahoe regional plan intend to crack the Tahoe time capsule that has kept the Basin’s town centers in stasis for the past 30-plus years.

Beginning in April the Nevada Highway Patrol will step up enforcement and crack down on residents who register their vehicles in other states.

CARSON CITY — The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that it recovered $5.6 billion in civil and criminal fraud efforts in 2011, a 167 percent increase over 2008. In Nevada, recoveries totaled $8.3 million in 2011, a 137 percent increase over 2008 when $3.5 million was recovered.
