SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council will be on Tuesday, July 14 starting at 9:00 a.m. It will be a virtual meeting and log on/comment instructions are at the end of the story.

Council will vote on a measure, that if approved by voters on November 3, will add a local one-cent sales tax for general city purposes. There has been outreach done with local residents and finding out what their highest priorities are, and this proposed tax increase would meet those requests:

4:15 a.m. - Verbal Dispute - Meyers

9:45 p.m. - DUI: Alcohol - Lake Tahoe Blvd - 29-YEAR-OLD MAILSUSPECT WAS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL.

The grand hall at MontBleu Casino Resort has been turned into a holiday paradise, a winter wonderland with the main attraction being the specialty Christmas trees.

On Thursday, local celebrities and media strolled by each of the designer trees, selecting those that won top honors of Most Elegant, Best Theme, Most Creative and Best of Show.

The excellent work on each made it almost impossible to come up with a winner, but four were chosen after much deliberation. Each tree will be paired with a special prize package during a live auction at Saturday's Gala.

There is a brand new club at South Tahoe High School that needs the help of student leaders to bring awareness about mental health to their fellow students on campus. Together, the students will work to end the stigma and made it understood that its okay to seek help, and where and when to find it.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of El Dorado County has spearheaded the new club which is called "STHS NAMI On Campus/Brain Health Leadership Club."

Each year, Live Violence Free brings together members and leaders of the community to strengthen their capacity to uphold their mission of promoting a violence free community through education and advocacy to address domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, and basic needs. With the support of our donors and community members, they host their annual Sunset Gala to build resiliency and resources for clients and families. This year is the agency's 17th Annual Sunset Gala, held at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on Sunday, October 23 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Are you committed to a violence free South Lake Tahoe?

Live Violence Free is offering free Crisis Intervention Training to members of the community who are passionate about working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.

Community members can help the survivors on their long and difficult journey by having the skills needed to lend support.

Live Violence Free is offering free training from September 22 to November 12 on Tuesdays and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. plus three Saturdays. All classes will be held at Lake Tahoe Community College.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Treatment Not Jails

Across the nation, many counties are investing huge sums of money to house people with mental illness in jails, with little return for the community in terms of public safety or treatment for people who need it most. A new national initiative, Stepping Up, provides an opportunity for counties to get support in addressing this problem.

10:12 p.m. - Lake Tahoe Blvd - STALKING.FEMALE DROVE UP TO DEPUTIES TO REPORT HER EX-BOYFRIEND WAS FOLLOWING HER IN ANOTHER VEHICLE. BOTH PARTIES ADVISED.

Studies show that an average of 4.6% of a population are in need of services to treat a serious mental illness at any given time. That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).

With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.
