Importance of keeping smoke detectors up to date
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 11:08amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Time is of the essence when fire hits your home. Things can rapidly change from smoke to flames, sometimes giving those inside very little time to get outside to safety.
Even though smoke detectors have been required in new construction and in homes undergoing a remodel for decades, not all homes have working detectors. They are broken, have a dead battery, or missing completely.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/02/2018 - 11:25pmThe end of daylight saving time is on Sunday, November 4, but could it be the last one in California?
On Tuesday voters in the state will be deciding the fate of Prop. 7, the advisory measure that, if passed, encourages the legislature to consider instituting year-round Daylight Saving Time. Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/30/2018 - 11:27amOur community has less than one week before November 6th, election day, arrives. There are many important issues on the ballot. CNN researchers came up with the following timeline for the clock change:
1784 - The idea of daylight saving is first conceived by Benjamin Franklin.
1914-1918 - Britain goes on DLS during World War I.
Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, don't forget to move clocks forward!
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2017 - 5:18pmBen Franklin was only kidding when he suggested 232 years ago that towns should employ the use of church bells or cannon blasts, if necessary, to wake citizens at sunrise so they could take full advantage of sunlight – a thrifty alternative to pricey candle power.
More than two centuries later, the joke's still on us. This Sunday is the annual ritual of moving our clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. (of course, nobody will know if you do it a little early like when you head off to bed ).

But why?
The reason the United States and many other countries, mostly in the West, shift to daylight saving time is contentious and confusing, and some of the more popular explanations are not grounded in reality. (It isn’t for farmers, as you may have learned in school.)
The general concept is to move an hour of sunlight from the early morning, when many would sleep through it, to the evening, when you could most likely do more with the light.
