16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/01/2019 - 6:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.
Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.
Nevada doctor arrested on distribution of opioids and health care fraud charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 10:39amDr. Devendra I. Patel, aka Devendrakumar I. Patel, 58, of Elko, Nev., was arrested Tuesday on 39 charges of unlawful distribution of prescriptions opioids and Medicaid fraud.
Patel is charged with 36-counts of distribution of controlled substances such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and three-counts of health care fraud. He is a cardiologist at his medical practice, Northeastern Nevada Cardiology. The statutory maximum penalty for distribution of a controlled substance is 10 years in prison and the maximum penalty for health care fraud is 10 years in prison.
Law enforcement and hospital kept busy with SnowGlobe issues
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2016 - 11:53amFans of electronic music flock to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field. An estimated 15,000 tickets have been sold for the three-day event which is held on the South Lake Tahoe community's newly created ball fields.
Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, drinking and illegal drugs.
El Dorado County teen latest victim of counterfeit hydrocodone
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/31/2016 - 8:42pmAn 18-year-old El Dorado Hills resident is the latest victim of a rash of overdoses from pills made to look like the prescription painkiller, Norco.
In Sacramento County, six deaths are attributed to the pills, and the death of county resident George Berry is now the seventh suspected victim. The pills ingested are actually Fentanyl, which is 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.
Mental health workshop to focus on suicide, drug overdose and depression

A panel of mental health experts will address the impact of suicide, drug overdose, depression and other issues affecting people in South Lake Tahoe during a workshop on October 21 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Creekside Room.
There are a host of partners presenting this workshop to the community including
El Dorado County, Barton Health, Tahoe Youth & Family Services and the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP).
Animal Ark toxicology results positive for barbiturate
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 11:03pmAnimal Ark wildlife experts continue to probe the death of a wolf and tiger after receiving toxicology results, which showed traces of two drugs used to euthanize animals and control seizures, on Wednesday morning.
Officials received lab results from the California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System, which came back positive for pentobarbital and phenytoin.
Both are considered barbiturates, a type of depressant drug that causes relaxation and sleepiness, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
