A public meeting was held on Friday night and that story will be carried on Saturday.
Overdue backpackers rescued by deputies and volunteers from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/09/2019 - 10:29pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and Search and Rescue volunteers responded to a call on Sunday, January 6 about overdue backpackers in the El Dorado National Forest, just as severe winter weather hit the region.
Family members provided deputies with the backpacker's travel plan and a map of their planned route.
Estimated 3,500 homes and businesses destroyed in NorCal fires; Red Flag Warning in place

evacuations across Northern California. Firefighters are battling 22 large
wildfires that have burned nearly 170,000 acres. Firefighters are bracing for
the winds to shift this evening and increase in speed. 17 people are confirmed
to have died in the wildfires this week. 11 people alone died in the Tubbs Fire,
making it the 6th deadliest fire in our state’s history.
While damage assessment continues on all the fires, it is estimated that at
North Lake Tahoe out of Christmas tree cutting permits, still some at SLT and Incline
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/05/2016 - 3:30pmThe North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center has run out of Christmas Tree cutting permits, but there are still some available at the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe, the USFS office in Incline Village and at El Dorado National Forest offices.
Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis through December 23, if available.
Prescribed burn near Union Valley Reservoir sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/11/2016 - 4:01pmSmoke from a prescribed burn on the east side of Union Valley Reservoir in the El Dorado National Forest sent smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin Tuesday.
The U.S. Forest Service is burning 240 acres over a two-day period in that area.
Prescribed burns in the Lake Tahoe Basin were scheduled to start this week but have been postponed since the area is still under fire restrictions.
Fire west of Lake Tahoe held to 25 acres; Now 60% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/06/2016 - 5:05pm7:20 p.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters will soon be in clean up mode on the Alder Fire after they made good progress today. They strengthened lines today increasing the containment of the fire to 60 percent.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
9:00 a.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters made good progress on the Alder Fire overnight and the fire is now 40 percent contained. The amount of brush and timber burned has been updated to 25 acres.
Firefighters gain on Trailhead Fire: 50% contained, burns 5,444 acres
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/29/2016 - 6:12am8:30 p.m. update 7/4/16: Firefighters working on the Trailhead Fire in El Dorado County gained a lot of ground Monday, getting a containment line around 50 percent of the fire. So far, 5,444 acres have burned.
King Fire arsonist sentenced to 20 years in prison, $60 million in restitution
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 4:45pmArsonist Wayne Allen Huntsman was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay over $60 million in victim restitution after he pleaded guilty Friday to starting the catastrophic King Fire in 2014.
Twenty years in prison was the maximum sentence Huntsman could receive for the guilty plea of three counts of Arson to Forest Land, admitted multiple enhancements for causing injury to firefighters and destruction of multiple structures.

Body of missing San Francisco teacher found near Slate Mountain
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/04/2015 - 7:49pmUpdate 8/7/15: The body found off the OHV Trail west of Slate Mountain in the El Dorado National Forest was positively identified today as 45 year-old Edward Cavanaugh of San Francisco. The identification was done by a forensic odontologist, who compared Cavanaugh’s dental records to the upper and lower jaw bones found near his motorcycle. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Fire ravaged forest brings sadness, also beauty for campers

Several members of a group of campers from Sacramento didn't even realize they were near the King Fire's burn zone as they set up tents at the Ponderosa Cove Campsite.
Fortunately, one camper did understand the risk from burned trees and branches that can still fall on unsuspecting hikers.

Free firewood gathering for the public at Wrights Lake
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/20/2014 - 9:15pmThe public can get free firewood at the Wrights Lake Recreation Area on October 25-26 and November 1-2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Portions of the area inside the El Dorado National Forest will be open to the public for woodcutting on both weekends. Woodcutters will be issued a free permit on site.
“The Forest Service is looking forward to a safe and successful wood cutting event. Please help us clean up this popular recreation area,” stated Richard Thornburgh, Pacific Ranger District Ranger.

This fall, while under your supervision, approximately 16% of the Eldorado National Forest burned due to the King Fire. You are entrusted to protect and maintain the health of this critical forest/watershed. Given the extreme drought and high fire risk conditions we experienced this summer, what fire restrictions, ranger alerts, precautionary measures, were in place the week of Sept 07, 2014? Arson yes, but could we have been more alert?
Parts of the El Dorado National Forest reopen; King Fire now 94% contained
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/01/2014 - 8:45pmThe Forest Service announced today that they are re-opening some popular recreation areas near the King Fire area. The Rubicon Jeep Trail, Wrights Lake, Desolation Wilderness and the east side of Ice House Road are now open to the public.
“Although fire crews have nearly contained the King Fire, it is still active, and there are a lot of firefighting resources still in the area,” said Laurence Crabtree, the USFS Forest Supervisor. “I intend to open more of the Forest to the public as soon as it is safe to do so.”
USFS issues forest closures for El Dorado National Forest
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/18/2014 - 7:52pmThe Eldorado National Forest has issued a closure order for public safety in the area impacted by the King fire beginning September 18, 2014, until the fire is declared out. The closure order includes the Desolation Wilderness.
“Under our Unified Command System, our top priorities are fighting this fire and keeping the fire fighters and the public safe, said Crabtree. “We cannot safely fight this fire with intermingled publics. Please stay out of the closed areas until I can reopen them, which I intend to do as soon as possible.”
Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 2:43pm9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.
After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
Small fire near Rubicon Lake in Desolation Wilderness brings smoke to Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 09/02/2012 - 9:27pmA two-acre wildfire continued to burn overnight in the Desolation Wilderness area near the boundary of the El Dorado National Forest. It is not threatening any structures and doesn't appear to be moving at a fast clip, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Smoke from the fire moved into the basin.
The fire was reported Sunday evening and is located near Rubicon Lake within the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit boundaries, said Heck. A helicopter has been deployed to knock down the flames and a team of firefighters will be on the fire overnight.
Crews respond to Kyburz, El Dorado National Forest fires
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 3:03pmFirefighters were putting out hot spots this afternoon on a small fire between Highway 50 and Kyburz. According to Capt. Daniel Berlant with Cal Fire, there was a downed, live power line in the area. It was possible the power line was the origin of the flames but that wasn't clear yet, Berlant said. Dry and breeze conditions were also a concern to keep the quarter to half-acre fire from spreading.
