Firefest this weekend in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/22/2015 - 1:43pmAlways a crowd pleaser, the annual Firefest is on Saturday, September 26 at the South Lake Tahoe Airport from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This free event highlights fire and life safety for children and families with exhibits and hands on demonstrations.
Helicopters will star at Firefest when they land at the airport. The three "Super Scoopers" currently making the airport their home will be parked on the tarmac as long as they aren't dispatched to a fire.
New local business to host Tahoe Business Expo
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 08/28/2015 - 2:47pmWest Coast Expos is organizing the "Tahoe Business Expo," an event where property and business owners, managers, CEOs and entrepreneurs will find resources and solutions while networking with experts in almost every field. It will be held at Harvey's Lake Tahoe on October 30, 2015.
They are looking for business owners who'd like to participate as an exhibitor, people to participate in a whole day of business seminars as well as people looking to connect with local companies. Seminars are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., exhibits open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

League to Save Lake Tahoe summer party to highlight new education center

June 19, 2015 - 5:00pm The public is invited to the League to Save Lake Tahoe's free Summer Kickoff party at the League to Save Lake Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, June 10 at 5:00 p.m. Music, food, fun, prizes and education will all be part of the evening's activities.
The party will feature the grand re-opening of their Fritzi & David Huntington Environmental Education Center. Featuring cutting-edge interactive displays, the Education Center’s overhaul has improved the agency's ability to educate and engage the public about how to protect Lake Tahoe and the threats facing the Lake.

This free event is open to everyone at the three adjacent properties.

The upcoming 4th Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show is full of hands on demonstrations, items for your home and garden, displays, music and food...all to get you in the mood for the next season.
Doors open on Friday, April 24, and will be open from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the exhibits continue from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Last year, over 1,200 people attended the Home and Garden Show which is held once again at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex located at 1080 Rufus Allen Blvd. Besides vendors there will also be a raffle full of prizes donated by the vendors.
Lake Tahoe Community College Art Exhibit and Public Reception

The community is warmly invited to three free art exhibit opening receptions at Lake Tahoe Community College. On Thursday, January 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., enjoy gorgeous printmaking by artist Emmy Lingscheit in her show Departure, housed in the Haldan Art Gallery in the library building. In the Foyer Gallery in the Fine Arts building, explore recent paintings by artist Kelley Hackleman in her show, Slightly Disheveled. In the Student Gallery in LTCC’s Main Building, artworks created by regional high school students will be featured.
Road Trip: Manzanar National Historic Site

I’ve done that route many times myself on the way to and from San Diego and Disneyland. As heading South, the Owens Valley opens up after leaving the town of Bishop, just over 200 miles from Tahoe. You’ll pass through the town of Independence, and six miles later you’ll find yourself at the Manzanar National Historic Site (the town has an ironic name as you’re about to find out).

Artists and fans of beautiful art have at least three great reasons to visit Lake Tahoe Community College this autumn. Three new art exhibits will be open to the public through December 5, 2014. All three will launch with an Artist’s Reception and talk on Thursday, Oct. 2 starting at 5 p.m.
The entire community is welcome to all three exhibits to meet the artists, ask questions about their process, and enjoy some light refreshments.
Washoe Tribe shares their culture and history during Wa-She-Shu It'Deh festival
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/27/2014 - 10:15pmThe Washoe Tribe spent their summers in Lake Tahoe thousands of years ago, and this weekend they shared their history, food and customs with the public during the annual Wa-SheShu It'Deh festival this weekend.
They currently live in four reservation communities in Northern Nevada and California: Woodfords, Dresslerville, Stewart and Carson City as well as in the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. Members from the tribe came together at Valhalla in dance and music, told stories and shared generations of history.
Hot August Nights cruising into South Lake Tahoe

Cars lining the street with their hoods up, rumbling engines, the sounds of rock and roll, cruising and fun vendors will been seen on the south shore Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26.
El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."
The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Wa She Shu It Deh Native American Arts Festival

The basket weaving competition features over fourteen different categories. The Washoe are highly regarded for their master craftsmanship of baskets and have had several well-known weavers throughout their history, including Dat So La Lee.
UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.
