City Council candidates respond to South Lake Tahoe Chamber questions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce Board recently asked the nine City Council candidates ten questions they felt were of most importance to its members. The questions focused mainly on topics relating to things that will or may affect both the local small businesses and the community in general.

Their board made the decision to not endorse a specific candidate this election, but instead rank them based on how much they align with the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce goals based on their answers to the questions below.

Ildefonsa Balwing ~ 1955 - 2020

Ildefonsa Balwing, age 65, passed away on July 22, 2020 in Riverside, California after a short, but hard fought, cancer diagnosis. She was born January 23, 1955 in Tanay, Rizal in the Philippines and was the tenth of eleven children in her family.

St. Theresa's Old Western Parish Festival

St.Theresa Catholic Church of South Lake Tahoe is holding their annual Parish Festival on Saturday, June 22 from noon to 9:00 p.m.in the church's parking lot. It has a western theme so cowboy hats and boots are encouraged.

The event will feature fun and games, music and entertainment. Enjoy delicious Mexican, Filipino and American food, drinks and desserts. There is also a beer and wine garden.

Don't forget the dog costume contest at 5:00 p.m.!

Members of the St. Theresa Filipino Community love sponsoring Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal and serving up a delicious Filipino themed dinner. Hosting their second Adopt A Day of Nourishment this year, the Filipino community group sponsored the March 25th Monday Meal and brought their well-honed cooking skills and favorite Filipino cuisine recipes to feed the grateful dinner guests congregating for a communal meal at Grace Hall.

City Council hears update on US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been over three decades in the making. The US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road, is getting closer to becoming a final plan and its implementation.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council heard a presentation by Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Lew Feldman and John Hasty of Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Tuesday, outlining what has been accomplished and what is left to be done.

On Monday, January 28, Bread & Broth’s 102 dinner guests were treated to a very special dinner. Members of St. Theresa’s Filipino community cooked and served chicken adobo, sweet and sour pork ribs, shrimp and chicken pasta, honey mustard chicken, steamed vegetables, rice, and salad. All delicious Filipino specialty dishes. In addition, to the heaping first servings dished out, many of the diners came back for seconds and containers filled with ‘leftovers’ to take home.

On March 29t, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal diners had a special treat, a delicious Filipino themed dinner. The evening’s meal was lovingly prepared and served by the Filipino Community members for their annual Adopt-A-Day of Nourishment sponsorship. This fantastic group served up teriyaki chicken and vegetables, chicken adobo, steamed rice, coleslaw topped off with delicious desserts to the 93 attending dinner guests. Needless to say, there were no ‘leftovers’ at the end of the meal.

Fatal pedestrian hit and run in Douglas County

A male pedestrian has died from injuries sustained in a hit and run crash in Minden early Saturday morning.

At 5:00 a.m. July 1, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of Fremont Street and Johnson Lane for a possible injured person in the roadway.

Upon arrival, deputies found a male in the roadway with significant physical trauma from being hit by a vehicle. He succumbed to those injuries.

Kayaker reported missing in Lake Tahoe

The search has been suspended for a man who was reported missing near Lester Beach, north of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

On June 8 at 9:15 a.m., Pham Dan Vu Thanh (who goes by Dan), called a friend to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.

Mila has been coordinating the AAD meals that the Filipino Community has been sponsoring for the last four years.

With the help of eleven members of the Filipino Community, a wonderful Filipino themed dinner was served to B&B’s dinner guests at the March 6th Monday Meal.

Immigrants in South Lake Tahoe reach out to police and school district

South Lake Tahoe is a community of diverse backgrounds reaching around the world, and with President Trump's current dialog on immigration, concerns are arising among immigrants who call Tahoe home, and from those that represent them in the area.

The current enrollment of Lake Tahoe Unified School District shows 42.4 percent are Hispanic, 3.6 percent Filipino, 1.2 percent Asian, 48.1 percent white and the rest of other nationalities.

Graduation rates increase at South Tahoe High

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today reported California’s cohort graduation rate climbed for the fifth year in a row in 2014 to a record high, with the biggest jump taking place among English learners.

Among students who started high school in 2010-11, 80.8 percent graduated with their class in 2014, up 0.4 of a percentage point from the year before. The California graduation rate has increased substantially since the class of 2010 posted a 74.7 percent rate.

Amada Soriano Masellones 1935-2014

Amada Soriano Masellones, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loving family on Tuesday morning, December 30, 2014 following a long illness.

Amada was born June 9, 1935, in Calape, Bohol, Philippines to Jorge and Macra Soriano. She attended and graduated from Silos Vocational School of Dressmaking in the Philippines on February 14, 1953.
