The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) is reminding residents to make preparations now to be ready for fall wildfires and to save time and energy next spring.
Tahoe Douglas Fire offers free ash cans to prevent fires

A 2014 fire in the northern end of Washoe Valley Drive Fire destroyed 29 homes, charred 3,177 acres and caused the death of an elderly woman after a man improperly discarded hot fireplace ashes.
SLT Fire Rescue quickly douses fire in South Lake Tahoe garage
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/19/2017 - 3:56pmA quick response by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Wednesday afternoon saved a home from major damage after a garbage can in the home's garage caught fire.
Owners of the home, which is located on Tahoe Vista Drive near Tahoe Island Drive, were at their residence when the fire started.
According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Tim Spencer, the cause is under investigation but it is suspected fireplace ashes disposed in a garbage can are the culprit. He said the fire was contained to the trashcan and a small part of the garage.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/08/2015 - 6:01pmIt's once again the season to enjoy a fire in our fireplaces and wood burning stoves, but that also means it's time again to remind everyone how to dispose of the resulting ashes.
It is very dangerous to dispose of fireplace, wood stove or barbecue ashes in improper containers and locations. Since 2014 there has been one structure fire, multiple dumpster fires and one deck fire due in South Lake Tahoe due to improperly disposed of ashes. When you add in Douglas and El Dorado counties, that number gets much higher.

Ashes can remain live and capable of starting a fire for several days, even when they appear to be out.

High winds expected Sunday prompt Forest Service fire alert

Lack of rain or snow has already pushed the fire danger level back to high, and the Forest Service is urging the public to use caution with activities that could start a fire, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
