Boaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

Winter was once-again the theme at the third annual Barton Foundation “Signature” Cocktail Contest on Thursday, September 13 at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe. The contest drew 177 attendees and grossed $5,900.30 for Barton Memorial Hospital’s Level III trauma center designation. Serving as the official “kick-off” of the four-day Festival of Trees & Lights to be held Thursday, November 29 through December 2 at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, the contest included mixologists [bartenders] from 10 restaurants around South Lake Tahoe.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $27,500 check to the California Tahoe Conservancy yesterday to allow completion of the Lower Blackwood Creek and Eagle Rock Restoration Project, a critical creek restoration and trailhead project on Lake Tahoe’s west shore.

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

Mixologists, also known as bartenders, will create delicious winter cocktail concoctions, while adding their own enticing flare during the third annual Barton Foundation “Signature” Cocktail Contest, Thursday, Sept. 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Riva Grill.
The contest, sponsored by Riva Grill and Tahoe Blue Vodka, is the official “kick off” to the annual Festival of Trees & Lights, held November 29 – December 2, at Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa.

A presentation on the Lahontan cutthroat trout will be featured tonight, Wednesday, at the U.C. Davis Lake Tahoe Regional Enviromental Center. The program and presentation by Gary Scoppettone, section chief of the Western Fisheries Research Center, begins at 6 p.m. (no host bar at 5:30 ) at the center, 291 Country Club Dr., Incline Village.

It’s that time of the year again. This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like the summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months, especially August.
To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.

July 27: Sparks Marina in Sparks: 3,589 rainbows: 10.3 inches.

A bear was found shot and killed on a beach in the Homewood area of Lake Tahoe, Calif., a Placer County sheriff's Deputy tells MyNews4.com. An investigation is being done by the California Department of Fish and Game.
According to bear advocates, this bear has been in the area for years. The bear's name was Sunny and it was a mascot for the Bear League, an advocacy group in the Lake Tahoe area.

The lion attacked a 63-year-old Marin County man who was camping along Shady Creek northwest of Nevada City. The attack occurred in the early morning hours of July 1.

Lake Tahoe Basin residents and visitors are invited to help remove one of Tahoe’s most prolific aquatic invasive weeds, Eurasian watermilfoil, during a community volunteer event at Baldwin Beach on Sunday, July 15.
The project is a partnership of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for all three agencies.
