Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Voting is the most American thing we do
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/12/2020 - 1:06pmThis Saturday I will drive a good friend with 93 years of knowledge to our voting place where we will cancel each other out. It's the American way. Voting is the most American thing we do. My mother and father took great delight in canceling each other every four years without damaging their sweet relationship in the least.
I tend to spend more time in the 19th century than the 21st, so call me a dreamer, but I like to remember how Stephen Douglas characterized Abraham Lincoln prior to their great debate, "a kind, amiable and intelligent gentleman, a good citizen and honorable opponent."

State of California travel bans still in place, even as El Dorado County lifts their order
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/28/2020 - 9:17amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Wednesday, May 27, El Dorado County rescinded its nonessential travel ban into the Lake Tahoe Basin, just as it did when letting the County-specific Stay At Home order expire in April.
The messaging is confusing as local orders are lifted, and state orders are still in place.
The action by the County does not mean that travel into Lake Tahoe Basin is all of a sudden okay though.

Mac the Naw: Topaz opener brings lots of catches, large mackinaws being caught at Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/14/2018 - 12:24amHello fellow anglers, welcome to the new year and may it bring you tighter lines. I can truly say the Topaz Lake fishing derby is off to a very good start.
On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.

For those of you driving out that morning, be careful and mindful of other drivers on the road that have might celebrated to much the night before.
Mac the Naw says Merry Fishmas to all and wait awhile longer for Sierra lakes to ice over
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/23/2017 - 9:21pmHello fellow anglers. I am happy to say, the winter solstice has come and gone. Meaning, each day now brings one minute longer of daylight. But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.
Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.
