USFS beaches and other day-use facilities around Lake Tahoe reopen Saturday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/18/2020 - 4:12pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin will re-open for day-use only beginning Saturday, Sep. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. I’ve attached the Forest Orders for your awareness.
The prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California remains in place.
Conservancy awards City of South Lake Tahoe $425K to plan downtown 56-acre project
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/28/2020 - 10:49amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has awarded a $425,000 grant to the City of South Lake Tahoe to help plan the future of the 56-Acre site, a south shore hub of civic and recreation activity across Highway 50 from Lakeview Commons.
“The 56-Acre site is already a vibrant gathering place for community members and visitors alike, and it has the potential to be so much more,” said South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember and Conservancy Board member Tamara Wallace.
Firewood cutting permits available in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest April 1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vegetation fires are natural and were normal before policies were created to suppress them for fear of uncontrollable and destructive wildfires as seen in the late 1800s. When some of the first residents arrived in Lake Tahoe between the Gold Rush and Silver Strike, it was common to see just six-seven Jeffrey Pines per acre. Trees in the Tahoe Basin were clear cut to provide the lumber for building mines under Virginia City.
Incline Village Forest Service office to close temporarily

All services will be available through the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe, including the sale of Access, Senior and Interagency passes along with fuelwood (seasonal) and wilderness permits. The South Lake Tahoe office also sells maps and offers backpacking, biking, hiking, off-highway vehicle and other recreational information for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

USFS announces West Shore fuels reduction project

The West Shore Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project will treat approximately 4,875 acres extending from Emerald Bay to Burton Creek State Park.

Woodcutting permits change in Eldorado Forest to allow dead trees to be cut
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/28/2016 - 10:59amWoodcutting permits on the Eldorado National Forest have been changed to allow larger standing dead conifer trees to be cut for firewood. A minimum of tTwo cords of wood can be cut for $15 per cord.
"This change in our woodcutting permits will encourage removal of potentially dangerous roadside hazard trees," said forest supervisor Laurence Crabtree. "Fire and bark beetles have left a lot of dead trees which could fall across forest roads, particularly the less traveled roads in the back country."

Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.
Permits should be purchased early and wood collected promptly as fire restrictions are likely to go into effect early and there may be days when no cutting is allowed.

The permits go on sale Wednesday, April 15 at the U.S. Forest Service Supervisor's office located at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

Forest Service approves Upper Echo Lakes Fuels Reduction project
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 01/02/2013 - 3:10pmA tree thinning and fuels reduction project on about 100 acres in the Upper Echo Lakes area and portions of a roadless area could begin this year, according to a decision by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
The project would take up to six years to complete and includes the removal of trees up to 16 inches in diameter, which would be collected, put into piles and either burned or made available for firewood. There is a possibility of brief closures of areas adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail, according to the Forest Service.
