September 13, 2024 - 7:00pm Our 2nd Annual Walk during Suicide Awareness Month will be held Friday, Sept 13, at 7 p.m. at Heritage Park. This event is free and open to those who are grieving a lost loved one. There will be a path of illuminary to walk with (or without) our therapy horses.
We look forward to a powerful and supportive evening to hold space for hurting people. As this event is free, and donations are appreciated to help cover costs. Thank you for your support.

Douglas County community resources to deal with grief, anxiety and feelings of being unsafe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/16/2019 - 10:01pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After the recent tragic accidents and murders in Douglas County, many people may be feeling grief and anxiety as well as feelings of being unsafe. County officials want residents to know they aren't alone and there are several support groups in the community that offer help, reassurance and comfort during this difficult time.
Below is a list of some organizations available to help:
Douglas County Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST)
South Lake Tahoe teen killed in San Luis Obispo crash
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/07/2018 - 1:49pmA South Tahoe High graduate has been identified as the victim in a single car crash on Highway 1 just after 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2018.
According to a press release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff-Coroner, the sole occupant of the vehicle was 18-year-old Zachary Andrew Harris of South Lake Tahoe.
Sheriff's deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle versus tree collision at Highway 1 and Stenner Creek Road, in-between Cuesta College and San Luis Obispo.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Tahoe Youth & Family Services teams up with Suicide Prevention Network for local services
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/06/2016 - 1:42pmStarting in Fall 2016, Tahoe Youth & Family Services will begin contracting with Suicide Prevention Network of Douglas County to bring suicide prevention education and resources to residents of South Lake Tahoe.
The combined effort will provide community-wide awareness programs and mental health stigma reduction outreach. Suicide survivor grief support groups will also begin at the Tahoe Youth & Family Services’ counseling office at 1021 Fremont Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. Funding for the new program comes from an El Dorado County Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) grant.
Holiday buzz starts with Barton's 45th Holiday Faire

Get into the holiday spirit and support community health at the forty-fifth annual Holiday Faire on Sunday, November 8. Community members and visitors of all ages are encouraged to attend this merry event at St. Teresa Grace Hall.
Every year, Barton Auxiliary volunteers and employees from The Attic Thrift Store select their favorite holiday and winter donations to sell at the Holiday Faire. Items available for purchase include holiday decorations, jewelry, antiques and collectibles, purses, gifts, and winter wear.

December 10, 2015 (All day) Barton Hospice encourages people who have experienced the loss of a loved one or have endured a significant, life-altering event to attend the ongoing bereavement group called "Reflections of Life and Loss." This group helps teach attendees how to cope with certain situations and encourages emotional connections with others. Support and bereavement groups allow people to release emotions they may otherwise keep to themselves. It can improve a participant's mood and decrease psychological distress.

Barton Auxiliary donates $230,000 and recognizes volunteers

More than 80 volunteers from the hospital, gift shop, and The Attic Thrift Store attended and were recognized for their service and gifts.

STHS: Counselors on hand to help students cope with Dejon Smith's death
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/14/2014 - 7:00pmThe administration team at South Tahoe High School met this weekend to prepare for the return of students on Monday, the first day of school after the death of their classmate, freshman Dejon Smith.
Principal Chad Houck sent out a phone and email message Sunday evening to all parents to inform them of the plan for Monday.
Barton Helping Beyond the Hospital Walls

In March 2012, Barton Health engaged with the community to complete a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) of South Lake Tahoe’s health needs. Part of the Affordable Care Act, all nonprofit hospitals must identify health needs for vulnerable, often under-served, populations within their community and create an action plan to address these needs.
