Food will be available at three South Lake Tahoe locations every Wednesday through August 22.

Over 3,000 attend 2nd annual Tahoe Brewfest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/06/2018 - 8:31pmThe weather, the venue and the crowd all combined for a successful 2nd annual Tahoe Brewfest, a fundraiser for the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club. 34 breweries gave out samples of their craft beers to the over 3,000 people who attended the event held at the Heavenly Mountain Resort California Base Lodge June 2.
Also there for the guests was Parker Bros. Root Beer, kombucha, live music from Ike and Martin, and local food vendors.
Attendees weren't just from South Lake Tahoe as there were many from out-of-town, including visitors from Chicago and Whistler, Canada.

Vail Resorts has acquired four new mountain resorts: Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont, Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire, Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado, and Stevens Pass in Washington State.
City Council to look at marijuana sales ordinance during Tuesday's meeting
Submitted by admin on Mon, 06/04/2018 - 10:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At their May 1 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council gave direction to the City Attorney's office to draft ordinances to regulate sales, cultivation and distribution of medical and adult-use cannabis.
Consensus at that meeting was to allow for two micro-businesses, two retail businesses, two cultivation businesses up to 5,000 square feet and unlimited testing labs.
At that same meeting, the Council assigned councilmembers Austin Sass and Brooke Laine to an ordinance sub-comittee and they have worked on the ordinance will be voted on Tuesday.

Unsafe tree removed at Heavenly Village, plans unveiled for what's next
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/04/2018 - 1:11pmMany saw the large tree at Heavenly Village as they drove or walked by, not knowing that it was a hazard and deemed unsafe to be around pedestrians. On Monday, June 4, the tree was cut down by the contractor hired to bring it down, Kenny Curtzwiler and K & K Services, and another local business, Frank's Stump Grinding, took care of the remains and ground level and below.
The 90 foot tree is now firewood, but Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village management team told South Tahoe Now what is going in its place.

Wine Walk at Heavenly Village a fundraiser for Christmas Cheer

For $20, participants will go to participating stores and get a sample of wine from Carson Road Wineries of El Dorado County. Proceeds go to benefit Christmas Cheer, the year round charity that supplies food and other supplies to those in need.
There will also be food specials at the Village, along with a chance to win great prizes.
Stop by the booth in the middle of Heavenly Village to pay the fee and get your pass to a fun evening.

They left the Heavenly California Lodge at 11:00 a.m. and the first racer crossed the finish line three hours and six minutes later after a trip through Christmas Valley, Hope Valley, Alpine County and the big climb on Kingsbury Grade.
Katie Hall, 31, of Saratoga, California won the day, but it was a close one as she crossed the finish line 29 seconds ahead of Tayler Wiles.

After a climb the professionals made look easy up the back side of Kingsbury Grade, several of the riders stayed in a pack until Egan Bernal from Colombia pulled away to win Friday's stage.

Quick-Step Floors’ Fernando Gaviria (COL) claimed his second win at the 2018 Amgen Tour of California, his sixth of the season. Gaviria further cements his comeback from a hand injury earlier this year, with the stage podium result duplicating Sunday’s Stage 1.

On Friday, May 18, the town will be the scene for the men's Stage 6 and the women's Stage 2, but with the rolling road closures and number of people in town for the day will take some planning to watch the excitement.
UHC cycling team training in South Lake Tahoe before Amgen TOC

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.
Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.

USFS approves Heavenly's plans that include widening trails
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/27/2018 - 6:01pmA project to improve existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort was approved this week by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
Improvements will include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Daniel Knight of Dayton, Nev., the assistant manager of Save Mart in Carson City came to town to join Stetina. Chadwick Clark of South Lake Tahoe, the chef at Camp Galilee in Glenbrook, also joined in. Both ride their bikes to work when weather allows.

Changes ahead for South Shore bus services
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/13/2018 - 10:07pmOne thing is certain, something has to change or there will not be enough money to operate buses around the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. What isn't certain is how those changes will look, where extra funding can come from, or if services will have to be cut.
During Friday's Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) board meeting, options to keep a sustainable transit system in place for Lake Tahoe were discussed. Buses continue to operate at a loss and that cannot continue, according to the TTD staff.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/09/2018 - 6:31pmPrescribed fire operations will continue around several areas around Lake Tahoe this week, weather permitting. he Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point and Burton Creek state parks on the West Shore, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on the North Shore, Logan Shoals on the East Shore and on Kingsbury Grade and off Ski Run Boulevard on the South Shore. Smoke may be present.

During the snow melt, trash can become exposed and the League is inviting everyone to join in as they celebrate Earth Month. Kick off the warm season and join in for a cleanup! Cleanup materials will be provided and all volunteers will be treated to a lunch, raffle and prizes.

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.

Memorial "Face Rat" party for Ronson Sakioka

There will be a memorial day on the slopes in memory of Ronson Sakioka on Friday, April 6 on the face of Heavenly, followed by an after-party in the California Lodge.
The 64-year-old Sakioka was a long time South Lake Tahoe area local. He was killed by a car as he attempted to cross Highway 49 at night during the Victorian Christmas in Nevada City on December 20, 2017.
Explosions close Highway 50 at Stateline
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/01/2018 - 8:35am11:47 p.m. update: Eastbound lanes on Highway 50 have reopened. The westbound lanes are still closed and traffic must use Lake Parkway instead.
* * *
10:45 p.m. update: Limited traffic will soon be allowed back on two lanes of Highway 50 through Stateline after NV Energy has re-energized their lines and power is back on in the area. As of 10:30 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said it should be about an hour longer until open.
Explosion holes are being patched temporarily and traffic will not be allowed to drive on the plates.

New South Lake Tahoe resort plans unveiled
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/28/2018 - 7:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2008 it was known as "The Hole" after financing dried up for a redevelopment project, bordered by Highway 50, Stateline Avenue, Friday Avenue and Cedar Avenue. A cement hole with rebar stayed until the project area could get under control of one owner through bankruptcy. In 2013, Owens Financial obtained a building permit to start spending $400 million to build over 27,000 square feet of commercial space along Highway 50. This was followed by the Zalanta Resort opening at Highway 50 and Friday Avenue in 2017.

Heavenly aims to close April 22, other resorts from April 8 to Memorial Day

Heavenly Mountain Resort announced today that their ski season will extend through April 22, offering daily skiing and riding. They have a lot of Spring Break planned activities through April 7.

Business Expo fills with 85 vendors - Early bird tickets still available

This year 85 exhibitors will feature their latest and greatest products, services and promotions. All members of the community are encouraged to attend and can expect a fun night of food tasting, beer and wine sampling, live music and vendor giveaways.
Heavenly Village Wine Walk to raise funds for Christmas Cheer

The next Shops at the Heavenly Village Wine Walk on Thursday, March 22, will be raising funds for Christmas Cheer All Year. It takes place at shops throughout the village from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Sample wine crafted from Amador County, food specials, and chances to win great prizes at every location.
Check in at the tent in the center of the Village. Cost is $20 per person.

Search and Rescue response under Heavenly Gondola
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/17/2018 - 1:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Valley Ski Patrol and the Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to an injured skier under the Gondola line on Wednesday, March 15 at about 12:23 p.m.
The local 54-year-old woman was backcountry skiing out-of-bounds when she injured her lower leg between the Gondola mid-station and Van Sickle Bi-State Park.
