What are your thoughts on Microchipping your pets?
Thank you,

Dear Arthur,
Very good question! Just last week we were able to return a dog that had been stolen because it was micro chipped. We located the dog and because we were able to verify the legal owner via the microchip it made getting the dog back to his owner a much easier process.

Ask Hopeful Henry: Why cats lose weight
Submitted by admin on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 6:01amDear Hopeful Henry,
I have a 15 year old cat who has started losing weight and is just not that interested in food (except for turkey sandwich meat). We have been to the vet and basically he is just old. He still cuddles and plays and uses his litter box so I really don’t want to have to put him down yet. Do you have any suggestions that might encourage his eating?

Hopeful Henry: How much exercise should my dog get?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 6:35pmHenry,
I frequently see young men riding skateboards or bicycles with small dogs running along beside them. How much strenuous exercise is good for little dogs and how can the dog owner know when he is pushing the dog too hard? Dogs will run really hard to stay up with their owner. How much is too much?

Ask Helpful Henry: Cars can be ovens for dogs in summer
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/30/2016 - 12:33pmEvery year, countless dogs die in cars on summer days. Sometimes it’s not even that hot outside. Many times the window is cracked and the car is parked in the shade. The startling truth is that even in seemingly safe conditions the temperature inside your car can soar to life-threatening heights in just ten minutes – about the time it takes to run into the post office or the coffee shop or the pet store.
Even on a relatively mild day, your car can turn into an oven with frightening speed.

Hopeful Henry: Many household items are poisonous to your dog
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 7:15amPoison Prevention Week just wrapped up, but the message is always important. The week is a campaign over 50 years old. Every year, we are urged to take notice of the chemicals in our lives that are dangerous. While much of the effort is spent on parents of young children, pets are likewise vulnerable to poisoning. In many instances, pets are MORE prone to poisoning, since we may not be wary of foods or plants that we have no problem with but are toxic to animals.

Hopeful Henry: Spaying and neutering your pets saves lives
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/23/2016 - 7:22amIn honor of World Spay Day I wanted to share some myths and facts regarding spaying or neutering your pets with the hope it will encourage you to make the correct decision and have your furry family members spayed or neutered (females get spayed and males get neutered).
MYTH: It's better to have one litter before spaying a female pet.
FACT: Every litter counts.
Medical evidence indicates just the opposite. In fact, the evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier.
MYTH: I want my children to experience the miracle of birth.
Hopeful Henry: Be a responsible pet owner
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/15/2016 - 9:09pmAsk Henry:
It’s Responsible Pet Owners Month so I wanted to share my top ten things you need to do to be a responsible pet owner.
1) Being a responsible pet owner starts before you even get a pet. Make sure you pick a breed that fits with your lifestyle. Do you live in an apartment? If so I wouldn’t rush out and get a Great Dane. Always consider adopting from a shelter, there are so many animals looking for their forever homes. If you must go with a breeder make sure they are reputable!
Hopeful Henry: What to do when you find, or lose, a pet
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/03/2016 - 7:39amWith lots of snow we are getting lots of visitors to the slopes around the basin, and a lot of these visitors bring their dogs to enjoy the vacation with the family. Sadly some of these pups get lost which is extra stressful as they are not in a familiar location. We recently have had two visiting dogs who went missing for over a week, one was found, injured but is going to be okay, while the other was found but the extreme outside conditions got the better of his and sadly he passed the night he was found.
Ask Hopeful Henry: Silly or Serious?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/22/2016 - 2:49pmDear Henry,
Just curious, my cat has started sticking his tongue out, I mean a lot. He will just sit and stick his tongue out at me. It’s cute but should I be concerned?
Thanks,
Arnold
Dear Arnold.
I’m actually glad you brought this up. While yes it’s cute, I had a kitty with this habit. While some cats just do this for no apparent reason my concern with your kitty is that it is new behavior. If you cat was doing this its whole life and your veterinarian had seen no signs of trouble then I would say you just have a silly kitty.
Hopeful Henry: Happy New Year, You can make a difference this year.
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 7:16amI like to start every year with this story, it is simple yet meaning full and will hopefully remind everyone that you can make a difference. When I’m having a bad day, feeling like what we do doesn’t matter or just isn’t enough, I re read this story and it reminds me that as long as we keep trying and never give up we are making a difference. If you have not read this short story, read it now and hopefully it will inspire you. If you have read it before, re-read it and get reminded of how much of a difference you can make.

Dear Marvin,
Hopeful Henry: Christmas and Holiday pet tips
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/04/2015 - 11:47pmFirst lets tackle the “to eat a Christmas Tree or to not eat a Christmas tree” issue. The tree itself is not particularly dangerous if a few needles are ingested, it will most like come right up via kitty or doggie vomiting. The bigger concern is the stagnant tree water as it is a breeding ground for bacteria and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should they drink it. Speaking of the Christmas Tree make sure you securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet.
Ask Hopeful Henry: Should I give my dog bones?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 8:37pmThis week we had a request for help from a family whose 10 month old German Shepard got his muzzle stuck in a knuckle bone purchased from a pet store. He had eaten out the center of the bone and the bone became lodged onto his jaw. After the owner tried for an hour to remove the bone it became apparent that an emergency vet appointment was need. The bone had broken his tooth and was causing extreme pain. Alpine Animal Hospital was nice enough to squeeze them in right away and was able to remove the bone with a minor surgery.
