A recent survey conducted in El Dorado County showed that fewer merchants are willing to sell tobacco products to minors compared to just two years ago. Of the 100 tobacco retailers surveyed countywide, only 11 stores sold tobacco products to youth, resulting in a sales rate of 11 percent. In March of 2010, a similar survey resulted in a sales rate of 14.5 percent.

An undercover police officer spoke to KRNV MyNews4.com telling the news station that South Lake Tahoe has become a major hub for drug trafficking since the limited legalization of medical marijuana in California.

Fire personnel in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been put on alert for this Sunday because of the possibility of strong winds that could cause a wildland fire to intensify and spread rapidly. Lack of rain or snow has already pushed the fire danger level back to high, and the Forest Service is urging the public to use caution with activities that could start a fire, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

New Years Eve is nearly here. In town is the three-day Snow Globe Music Festival that began Thursday and will run through Dec. 31. The festival will be held on the sports field adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Community College on Al Tahoe Boulevard. California’s landscapes are under siege from a host of threats. Catastrophic wildfire, climate change, invasive species and increasing human population put these delicate ecosystems at risk. The U.S. Forest Service has recognized and battled these threats for decades, but recently the agency recognized the need for a more focused approach on Ecological Restoration as the primary goal for all land management actions.

Here is a reminder from the Nevada Department of Transportation about the handheld cell phone use law, passed this spring by the Nevada Legislature. Officers will begin issuing warnings beginning Oct. 1. The law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2012. It is already illegal to drive while talking on the phone or texting in California.

The second of California’s two free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3. The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You'll be able to fish wherever you like in California. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
So, be sure to obey those rules and regulations. Don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be very expensive.

Paddlers at Lake Tahoe who enjoy the peace and solitude of skimming over crystal clear waters can now join the Tahoe Keepers stewardship community to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species, according to an invasive species multi-agency committee.

Tahoe Keepers is a free training program designed to help non-motorized watercraft operators guard against inadvertently transporting aquatic invasive species to water bodies within the Lake Tahoe Basin by self-inspecting and decontaminating their boats and gear after each use.
