SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Multiple new fires, mostly from last week’s lightning, are causing a drastic decrease in air quality at Lake Tahoe and throughout the state. Another inversion is expected to set up overnight Thursday, and visibility may be impaired due to smoky conditions.

The air quality in all area communities has been around the unhealthy to very unhealthy range for the past two days. As of 3:45 p.m. Thursday, the Air Quality Index in South Lake Tahoe was 195.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The Inversion Gym Girls Gymnastics Team entered the 2020 season in top form with back-to-back wins at their first two meets. The girls were competing in the Excel Division, sanctioned by USA Gymnastics, at the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. The competitions are all comprised of the four women’s gymnastics events; Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, with awards also for the best All-Around performances. In each meet multiple teams compete, from gyms around Northern California and Nevada.

It's time once again for local youth to take part in the annual "Dance Team for a Day," a great opportunity to train with the South Tahoe High School Dance Team and perform during halftime at Saturday's basketball team.

All youth in grades 1-8 can participate.

A number of fires across northern and eastern California continue to bring hazy conditions and degraded air quality to northeast California, the Sierra, and western Nevada. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Sonora Pass to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City.

All students from 1st grade to 8th grade are invited to be part of the South Tahoe High Dance Team during the squad's 3rd annual Dance Team for a Day.

On January 20, participants will learn all the moves and then perform during halftime of the South Tahoe High Varsity Basketball game against Lowery High.

All participating kids get a t-shirt, lunch and a day of fun for $35. Funds go to held with Dance Team uniforms. Check in at 10:00 a.m. and perform at 2:30 p.m. Attire for the day are black leggings or sweatpants, jazz or tennis shoes, and hair needs to be worn away from face.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) is holding their annual Blue Ribbon Awards dinner on Thursday, November 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Ballroom. This gala event honors businesses, organizations, and individuals for civic contributions, tourism experiences, customer service, and entrepreneurial achievements. Ryan Galles, the principal of Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, has announced that he is leaving Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

The inversion layer over Lake Tahoe Tuesday will be pushed out Wednesday as a new storm hits the basin late Wednesday night. Travel over the passes will be impacted during this storm, but with a winter storm warning up for elevations above 7,000 feet, lake level will see mostly rain with a little snow.

Snow will begin to move into the Sierra late Wednesday night with periods of moderate to heavy snow continuing through Friday evening according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The winter storm warning has moved to 1:00 a.m. Thursday to 10:00 p.m. Friday, February 3.

Dance Team for a Day is back! Join the South Tahoe High School Varsity Dance Team for a fun day of dancing and performing on Saturday, February 4 starting at 10:00 a.m. Participants will spend the day with the team, learn dances and then perform at the halftime show of the South Tahoe High vs. Lowry High of Winnemucca basketball game at 2:30 p.m.

This is a fundraiser for the team and costs $35 which includes a performance T-Shirt and lunch.

Participants will need to wear black leggings or sweatpants, jazz shoes or tennis shoes and hair must be worn away from the face.

9:00 a.m. update 9/18: The Owens River Fire burning east of Highway 395 and north of Owens River Road in Mono County has exploded to an estimated 4,500 acres. Even with the growth, firefighter were able to get it 10% contained.

Named the Owens River Fire, it is burning in sagebrush and Jeffrey pine.

9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.

After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
