Deputies arrest pair of Grinches who stole holiday gifts
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 12:43amhe Washoe County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men today on charges of stealing gifts from generous citizens in the Galena Forest area. The two men have been identified as Sean Madigan, 51, and his son, Depaul Madigan, 22, both of Reno. They are accused of taking Christmas gifts homeowners generously left as a ‘thank you’ for waste services employees.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the theft when several alert citizens called to report the suspicious activity. The homeowners were able to provide a vehicle description and a description of the subjects involved.
Opinion: Why Total Recall is Necessary

The article uses accusations of gossip, vague personal attacks, and sneering degradation of “some of the people” to dismiss the serious issues plaguing our County government.

South Lake Tahoe retirees file lawsuit against the City
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/11/2015 - 1:20pmWhen the recession hit and many cities were faced with bankruptcy and skyrocketing healthcare costs for their employees, retirees had benefits cut or renegotiated. The City of South Lake Tahoe survived those turbulent times by taking a look at the costs they could reduce or restructure, and benefits for retirees was one that took a hit.
Now, many of those employees have filed a lawsuit against the City.
Councilwoman sues the City of South Lake Tahoe and City Manager
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 1:34pmCity Councilwoman JoAnn Conner filed a lawsuit against the City of South Lake Tahoe and City Manager Nancy Kerry in El Dorado County Court on Wednesday, December 9, asking for the City Council's censure of her be withdrawn.
In a special meeting of the Council on October 19, Conner was censured for interactions she had with City staff which at times were described as bullying and creating a hostile work environment.

Stretch of Carson City Freeway officially named in honor of Deputy Carl Howell

The ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the state capitol grounds featured remarks from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Nevada Department of Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Mayor Bob Crowell and Kevin Howell, father of Carl Howell.
In 3-2 vote, South Lake Tahoe leaders get rid of retail bag ban

Mayor Wendy David and Mayor Pro Tem Austin Sass were the only ones who wanted to continue the ban but were outvoted in the 3-2 vote.
South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting suspect arrested on multiple felony charges

Samuel Tovar, 43, was arrested after a high-risk search warrant was served at 816 San Francisco Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4. Inside they found Tovar, who had been avoiding law enforcement since the shooting.
Crackdown on holiday drunk drivers in South Lake Tahoe

Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers from December 18 to January 3.

Increased law enforcement for Click-it or Ticket campaign in Nevada

Douglas County deputies get specialized training

Douglas County Deputies Matthew Sampson and Steven Kimbrell graduated from the academy on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after attending the academy for four months. The P.O.S.T. academy is located at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility, in Carson City, Nev.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists that experts are predicting a slight increase in all methods of travel nationwide, with about 47 million people traveling either by car or airplane for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Processed marijuana stolen during El Dorado County home invasion robbery
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/23/2015 - 6:38pm11/24/15 update: The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office arrested both Ross and Stone on warrants issued by El Dorado County. When contacted, both Ross and Stone were armed with loaded firearms. They were taken into custody without incident and some of the stolen property from the Greenwood robbery was recovered. Ross and Stone were booked into the Sacramento County Jail on weapons and drug charges. They were also booked on warrants from El Dorado County. They are both in custody at the Sacramento County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Redding man faces $5M fine and 40 years in prison for pot crimes

Man facing several charges after South Lake Tahoe robbery
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 2:56pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. in the area of the CVS Pharmacy and Tahoe Beach Retreat Hotel on Highway 50. Two adult males reported being robbed by a man brandishing a handgun and long-bladed knife.
As they arrived, officers received other reports of the suspect firing one round after robbing two other adult men at the rear of the hotel.

As our brains grow, they create a blueprint for every new experience we have, the sounds, the touches and the sights. Tommy Moose, symbol of caring, donated to local police and fire departments
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 11:52pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be handing out stuffed moose to children they come across in their jobs who are facing times of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.
Members of Women of the Moose, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 408 donated a box of Tommy Moose to the departments. Tommy Moose personifies one of the tenants of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for children.
“The healing begins with helping kids at the scene of a serious event—starting right away makes good sense,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler.

The department is deeply appreciative of the support given to the family of Mark Hounsell who was killed, along with his wife Jeanne and her friend Laura Fisher, in a motor vehicle accident. They are survived by 4 children who have been the recipients of beautiful and heartfelt support from the entire community. The fund for the Children is now approaching the goal of $130,000. Operation Scarecrow keeps Nevada children safe from predators

Father and son arrested during El Dorado Hills marijuana grow bust
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 5:14pmComplaints about an offensive smell and unsightly tarps brought out El Dorado County Sheriff's detectives to a home in El Dorado Hills who ended up uncovering a large marijuana grow.
On October 23, 2015, a search warrant was served on a residence and property in the 1400 block of Malcom Dixon Road.
When they arrived they found 52-year-old Jeffrey Johansen, Sr. guarding a marijuana grow from a tree house, armed with a shotgun. He complied with law enforcement and put down the shotgun.

An large crowd of family, friends and law enforcement paid their respects both along the route from the funeral home in Carson City to the church and at the church.
City to assist Barton Health with their $20 million bond sale
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/20/2015 - 7:05pmAs they've done on six previous occasions, the City of South Lake Tahoe and Barton Healthcare System (Barton) will be teaming up again in order for the hospital to issue $20 million in bonds.
There is no risk to the City. They are simply acting as the conduit so Barton can issue tax-free bonds, reducing their interest charges by 1.5% to 2%.
Federal tax law requires any proposed financing of a facility to be approved by a governmental agency having jurisdiction over the area it is located.
South Lake Tahoe City Council censures JoAnn Conner

An overflowing crowd spent over three hours in Council Chambers as comments were made both supporting Conner, and against what they said was "abusive, bullying and intolerant behavior."

Authorities find runaway who threatened a school shooting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/15/2015 - 7:18pm9:45 p.m. update 10/15/15: Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports that the young man who ran away from China Spring Youth Camp was found at the Walmart on Topsy Lane and taken into custody. He was arrested without incident or injuries.
Numerous tips received by law enforcement led to his capture.

South Lake Tahoe man in jail on robbery, burglary, drug and assault charges

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), Jesus Corona Mariscal went to the former girlfriend's home on Wednesday night. He entered the home, allegedly grabbed her throat and choked her, then stole her keys and phone, and left.

FBI classifies North Tahoe/Incline Village church vandalism as hate crimes
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/07/2015 - 7:45pmThe FBI and Placer County Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s help in identifying the person or persons responsible for vandalizing churches in the North Lake Tahoe area.
Between April 4 and September 14, 2015, multiple churches were vandalized, including one in Kings Beach and one in Tahoe City. One religious statue and exterior walls were spray-painted with offensive statements. Detectives are working with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, which has also had several churches vandalized in the Incline Village area.
Tragedy at a Community College—what are we doing here?

A certain feeling of helplessness has become the norm when we look at these events from the prevention perspective. We may ask questions like:
“Why do people who would do such a thing have access to a gun?”

160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 9:23pmThough long awaited precipitation decided to fall in South Lake Tahoe Thursday, the Neighborhood Evacuation Drill still went ahead as planned.
"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.
He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.
Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe indicted on kidnapping charge
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 8:49pmA federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Matthew D. Muller, a 38-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale, charging him with one count of kidnapping.
Muller is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach. He allegedly demanded a $15,000 ransom.
Highland Woods neighborhood to be evacuated during drill

The neighborhood evacuation drill will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to test the city's emergency system. All visiting or living in the Highland Woods area that wish to participate will be evacuated to the end of Sierra Blvd at the snow dump area. A public information officer will be there along with the Red Cross and informational booths and displays. Snacks will be provided.
Local officers honored during National Thank a Police Officer Day

South Lake Tahoe local Daniella Flatau tried to encourage people to support law enforcement by organizing the local celebration of a day meant to show those sworn to protect the public that people support them, especially in a day and age where violence against the police is increasing daily.
Benicia family missing following El Dorado County fire

Adam Buchanan, his 7-year-old son Gavin and Gavin’s mother Molly McAfee have been reported missing after a fire gutted Buchanan’s cabin near Georgetown in El Dorado County “last weekend,” according to the release.
The actual date of the fire was not immediately available.
The statement was released by the law offices of Gizzi & Reep, LLP in Benicia.
Reno Gazette Journal files lawsuit against Sparks over pot business licenses
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 10:05pmThe Reno Gazette-Journal filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Sparks in an effort to compel them to release the names of medical marijuana business licensees.
As the newspaper expands its coverage of Nevada’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry, the RGJ has requested and collected copies of current business licenses for cultivation centers, dispensaries and production facilities in the area. Reno and Washoe County both have policies to release all of the information that the licenses entail.
The aftermath of Proposition 47: Property crime up in South Lake Tahoe

Since then, South Lake Tahoe and other cities across the state are seeing a big increase in crime. Prop. 47 reduced the penalties for certain theft and drug crimes in California. Several crimes that were once a felony because a misdemeanor overnight.
High tech anti-theft dots to help South Lake Tahoe Police

The new technology is called Anti-Theft Dots. This DNA for property crime will assist the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) in their efforts to combat theft in the community. Property crime is the number one crime statistic in the nation according to the Department of Justice.
South Lake Tahoe remembers those who sacrificed their lives on 9-11

Fourteen years ago 2,977 people died as terrorists hijacked four passenger planes, smashing two into the World Trade Center in New York. A third jetliner rammed into the Pentagon outside Washington while a fourth one crash-landed on an empty field in Pennsylvania.
Multi-agency drug seizure in Nevada nets 6,000 marijuana plants
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2015 - 6:41pmA large illicit marijuana grow in the mountains of Lincoln County, NV was eradicated after law enforcement found 6,476 marijuana plants in the remote area. The plants had an estimated street value of $17 million.
It appears that individuals had operated the site for several years and was capable of producing large quantities of illegal marijuana intended for sales and distribution. In addition to the marijuana plants, law enforcement personnel recovered and removed nearly two miles of black irrigation piping, along with various chemicals, used during the growing process
Caesars fined $9.5 million over lax money-laundering controls
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/09/2015 - 6:24amU.S. and Nevada regulators have fined Caesars Entertainment Corp.’s bankrupt unit a total of $9.5 million for deficient anti-money-laundering controls at its Caesars Palace VIP rooms, which cater mainly to Chinese high-rollers.
