U.S. life expectancy drops for first time in over 20 years
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/13/2016 - 6:35pmThe Centers for Disease Control (CDC) just released their annual report this week, and there was some good news mixed with a fairly surprising fact: For the first time since 1993, Americans’ life expectancy has actually decreased and is now lower than Canada, Germany, France and other developed countries.
The life expectancy of U.S. residents in 2015 declined by 0.1 years to 78.8. While this figure isn't drastic, it is making news since its the first drop in life expectancy in more than two decades.
The 10 leading causes of death in 2015 remained the same as in 2014. Age-adjusted
Smoke detectors: Do you know your expiration date?
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/11/2016 - 5:57pmDuring Fire Prevention Week, the Tahoe Fire Fuels Team is reminding Lake Tahoe Basin residents that this is the time to check your smoke alarm.
Even if you change your batteries in the old style alarm annually, their life expectancy is still ten years. The new sealed smoke detectors which are required in new building codes require no battery change but they too are expected to only last ten years.
Letter to the Editor: Why vote for Bernie Sanders
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 05/11/2016 - 10:55amIn a representative democracy, the system the United States supposedly has, the policy making is controlled by the representatives elected by the people. The idea behind representative democracy is that people will elect representatives that will serve their best interest. However, in the United States the funding for election campaigns is provided by large corporations, banks, and a handful of wealthy individuals that results in the election of representatives who serve the best interests of the large corporations, banks, and wealthy individuals.
Metatatic Breast Cancer deserves more
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 10/13/2015 - 2:14pmOctober is pumpkin spice and jack o lanterns and crisp mornings and pink ribbons. It is Halloween and homecoming and races “for the cure”. For people like me, with metastatic breast cancer, it is “Pinktober” and a reminder that we will never be cured, because despite 30 years of awareness and fundraising, 40,000 Americans still die every year from metastatic breast cancer, just as many as died in 1970.
