Memorial Day ceremony to honor Lake Valley Firefighter Larry Stewart
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/24/2018 - 10:55pmLake Valley firefighter Larry Stewart was on his way to a fire at Camp Richardson on Friday July 3, 1964 when the water tender truck he was driving ran into a tree. He died two days later.
On Memorial Day, 2018, Stewart will be dedicated on the Public Safety Wall of Honor during a ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m.
In 2017, the first ceremony was held and the names of US Forest Service-Tahoe Basin Firefighter Mikey Hallenbeck and Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) irefighter Mitch Underhill were permanently etched on the Wall.
Memorial in South Lake Tahoe dedicated to local heroes
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/22/2017 - 9:42amThe new public safety memorial wall was dedicated during a public ceremony on Friday. Fire trucks and patrol cars lined the street as law enforcement, US Forest Service and fire personnel gathered at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.
Speakers included Undersheriff Randy Peshon, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston.
Fundraiser for memorial signs to honor fallen Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/30/2017 - 8:39amA stretch of Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been renamed the Firefighter Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck Memorial Highway, and his family is raising funds to produce and install the signs.
Hallenbeck died fighting the Sierra Fire in August of 2015, near where he worked as a ski life operator. The 21-year-old was also a wildland firefighter for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Golf tournament to raise funds for fallen South Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 12:27pmThere will be a golf tournament at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course on Saturday, October 3 to benefit the family of fallen firefighter, Mikey Hallenbeck.
Hallenbeck, 21, died this summer after a tree fell on him while fighting his first fire as a member of the U.S.F.S. fire crew. He grew up in Shingle Springs, Calif., was living in Meyers at the time of his death and worked at Sierra-at-Tahoe during the winter.
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation will host the tournament, called "Barefoot for Birdies," with all funds raised going to the family as well as the foundation.

Fallen firefighter to be honored with processional through South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/12/2015 - 2:54pmThere will be an escorted processional from South Lake Tahoe to Placerville on Thursday to honor 21-year-old Mikey Hallenbeck. The young U.S. Forest Service firefighter, and Sierra-at-Tahoe employee, died while fighting his very first fire on Saturday
The U.S. Forest Service and cooperating fire agencies will escort Hallenbeck from the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe to his final resting place. The procession will start at approximately 10 a.m. and proceed westbound on Highway 50 up Echo Summit, through Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, down to Placerville. It is expected to end at 2 p.m.

“Our hearts are saddened by the loss of Michael," said The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. "We are indebted to Michael for his service in keeping the citizens of El Dorado County safe. Thank you for your dedication to our community.”
