Tahoe Douglas Fire blood drive in honor of injured firefighter

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department is holding a blood drive in honor of Fresno Fire Department Captain Pete Dern who was burned over 70% of his body while responding to an house fire in March.

Not only will donations show support for first responders who put their lives on the line to aid and protect us, donors also earn a chance at winning one of two $750 Southwest Airlines gift cards.

Kids who collected 44,000 dimes visit burned firefighter

Maple Creek Elementary students learned the value of a dime Friday.

For collecting $4,402 — the equivalent of 44,020 dimes —for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, they got a wave and a smile from Pete Dern, the Fresno fire captain who is recovering from severe burns he got while battling a blaze.

“It made his day,” said Dern’s wife, Kelly Dern, who accepted a check from the students for the burn center.

“His face lit up,” said Dern’s daughter, McKenzie Dern.

Investigators say a woman arrested for a fire that severely injured a Fresno fire captain has a history with fire. Julia Harper, 52, is jailed on charges of setting a fire causing great bodily injury. Fire Captain Pete Dern was nearly killed while trying to put out the fire Harper allegedly started.

On March 29, 2015, Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern fell through the roof of a burning home, resulting in severe burns over 70% of his body. In the days since the accident, firefighters and other concerned people from around the country have been sending both prayers and money to the family.

The outpouring of support is also evident on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. On Sunday, April 19, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and The Local 2441 are putting on a pancake breakfast to raise money for the mounting expenses for Dern and his family.
