Public Health reminder: Keep pets current on rabies vaccines

El Dorado County Animal Services is reminding residents to keep pets current on rabies vaccines and notify Animal Services of any animal bite. A teenager staying in South Lake Tahoe was rescued by emergency personnel on Lake Tahoe Wednesday after getting her leg stuck between boulders while swimming near Skunk Harbor, a popular area on the East Shore.

Tahoe Douglas Fire's Marine 24 assisted North Lake Tahoe Fire and Sand Harbor lifeguards in the rescue. An off-duty Reno firefighter was the first to reach the girl, according to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District's fire marshal.

Third rabid skunk found in El Dorado County this year

A rabid skunk was found in the Pleasant Valley area of El Dorado County, bringing the total number of the rabid animals found to three so far in 2015.

The county's Animal Services reported the skunk was found on Pleasant Valley Road near Grindstone Road and White Rose Lane.

One of their officers was called to the scene around noon on April 24, 2015, after a member of the public observed the skunk showing signs of rabies. The officer retrieved the skunk and sent it to the El Dorado County Public Health Laboratory for testing. Test results came back positive for rabies on April 27.

Outdoors with Don Q: Sigh, so-called 'Man's Favorite Sport' belongs to Elaine

Last Thursday, Elaine and I spent an enjoyable morning (as usual) fishing for Mackinaw (Lake) Trout at Lake Tahoe with our longtime friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!
