Sierra snow pack near Lake Tahoe at 93% of average
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/30/2020 - 12:12pmPHILLIPS STATIONS, Calif. - The Sierra snow pack was measured at 93 percent of average on Thursday at Phillips Station, west of Lake Tahoe, the first of the winter 2020 snow pack surveys.
A team from California Department of Water Resources (DWR) found 30.5 inches of snow with 10.5 inches of snow water equivalent (SWE).

Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/04/2018 - 9:36pmThere is a very warm, wet storm heading to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada, bringing with is gusty winds and significant rains beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday. There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.
Snow levels may rise as high as 11000 feet, keeping the bulk of the precipitation in the form of rain. Rainfall totals between 2 to 4 inches are expected along the
Change in weather ahead for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/02/2018 - 8:12pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as many were enjoying sunny skies and temps in the 50s and 60s, Mother Nature is sending a bit of change to the area this week.
Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.
Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

Sierra snowpack at an encouraging 136% of average
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/30/2015 - 2:18pmThe first snowpack survey of the season was taken Wednesday in Phillips, showing the snowpack us at 136% of average with a water content of 16.3 inches.
"This is encouraging but not where we'd like to be," said Frank Gehkre, the Chief Snow Surveyor for the California Department of Water Resources. "This is clearly much better than last year at this time."
One year ago the survey showed the snowpack at 47% of average.
Storm from the Pacific to bring snow and rain to Lake Tahoe

Areas north of the Sacramento region should see some light precipitation Thursday with increasing rain and mountain snow on Friday. By Friday night and Saturday, all of northern California will be shifting into a wetter pattern with rain or mountain snow expected during parts of every day through at least Christmas day next Friday.

"Change is happening, clearly we're in a drought, whether it's here for short term, or long term, time will tell," said Rice, the VP and General Manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe. "The ski industry has the most to lose in a drought."

Snowpack measures just 20% of normal in the Sierra
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/03/2015 - 11:25pmThose who live in the Sierra Nevada already know about the minimal snowpack and the monthly snow survey conducted near Sierra-at-Tahoe showed just that.
The water content of the snow for the state as a whole is at 19% of the average for this time of year, with the central Sierras at 20% of average.
Northstar and Heavenly Open on Saturday, Kirkwood Aiming for Monday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/22/2013 - 9:26pmHeavenly Mountain Resort had to postpone their Opening Day to Saturday due to the region's high winds today. They'll have 1.5 miles of open runs with the Gondola and Tamarack Express running. On the north shore, Northstar is opening on Saturday as well with 3 lifts and 4 runs opened. Kirkwood has been making snow to go on top of the 9" of fresh powder received in this week's storm. They are planning on opening Monday but will not know for sure until Sunday's efforts and weather determine that.

Avalanche search training continues this week at Mt. Rose Summit Highway

Training objectives and stations will cover transceiver and RECCO search, proper probe line set up and execution, snow pit/snow pack information and a search dog demonstration.

California stream fishing season begins April 28

On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
If you’re new to the Lake Tahoe and Sierra, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire opening weekend:
Heavenly opens Cal to Nevada crossover trail

The crossover trial is now open. That in conjunction with the predicted natural sow heading our way is indeed good news. Like many I've been waiting to ski Heavenly until the crossover trial opened. Now I'm off to the slopes.
