Amgen Tour of California put on hold in 2020

The Amgen Tour of California race has been put on hiatus for the 2020 racing season according to an announcement Tuesday by AEG, the sports and live entertainment company that produces the race each year. Over the past 14 years, the cycling tour has showcased some of today’s best known and most decorated international cyclists, including numerous World, Olympic and National Champions. South Lake Tahoe has been a host city on both the men's and women's sides of the popular rolling festival.

UAE Team Emirates’ 20-year-old Tadej Pogacar (SLO) is the 2019 Amgen Tour of California champion after a fast and furious sprint finish at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl concluded a week of racing.

Lead changes as Amgen Tour of California heads into final stage

A determined ride by UAE Team Emirates’ 20-year-old Tadej Pogacar’s (SLO) today could make him the youngest ever Amgen Tour of California champion when the race concludes in Pasadena tomorrow. First-timers to this race, Pogacar and 21-year-old Sergio Higuita battled to the steep summit finish atop Southern California’s Mt. Baldy, with the EF Education First Pro Cycling Columbian rider slipping into second place for the stage after a wide turn to the finish gave the younger rider clearance to the line.

It was Stage 5 for the men's portion of the Amgen Tour of California as well as day 1 for the women on Thursday as both races are now centered in Southern California.

Egan Bernal, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Colombian rider, defended his lead from Thursday's race in Lake Tahoe to claim the 2018 Amgen Tour of California championship by the second largest margin in race history, +1.25” ahead of BMC Racing Team’s U.S. rider Tejay van Garderen. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a great day of cycling for the women racing in the Amgen Tour of California, light winds, mild temperatures and clear skies. They left the Heavenly California Lodge at 11:00 a.m. and the first racer crossed the finish line three hours and six minutes later after a trip through Christmas Valley, Hope Valley, Alpine County and the big climb on Kingsbury Grade.

Katie Hall, 31, of Saratoga, California won the day, but it was a close one as she crossed the finish line 29 seconds ahead of Tayler Wiles.

With just over 2k left to ride to the summit of Gibraltar Road, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Egan Bernal (COL) attacked and swiftly climbed away to a solo victory to close out Stage 2 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. Tao Geoghegan Hart and his Team Sky teammates set an unyielding pace all the way up the steep grade in support of lead rider Bernal to help launch him to his fourth victory of the 2018 season, shoring up the race lead as well as nearly all of the classification wins with today’s epic climb and overall performance.

UHC cycling team training in South Lake Tahoe before Amgen TOC

The Amgen Tour of California is just a week away, and since both the women's and men's races come through South Lake Tahoe this year, many cyclists can be seen training on area roads.

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.

Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.

Top cycling teams heading to South Lake Tahoe for Amgen TOC

All eyes will be on South Lake Tahoe this May as top women and men cyclists from around the world race through the mountains during the annual Amgen Tour of California (TOC).

Anna van der Breggen wins Amgen women's race; Katie Hall second

On Sunday the four-stage Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM concluded with Boels-Dolmans’ 2016 Olympic Games road race gold medalist Anna van der Breggen (NED) taking the overall win. Van der Breggen rode into the final race day one second behind UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling’s Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) and earned valuable Sprint points during today’s Sacramento circuit race to take the overall race victory by one second. Megan Guarnier wins Stage 1 of Amgen's women's race in South Lake Tahoe

One doesn't have to be a fan of professional cycling to enjoy the first two stages of the Amgen Breakwaway From Heart Disesase Women's Race Empowered with SRAM in South Lake Tahoe. People lined the streets Thursday as racers went on a trip around the lake with both the start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and the same is expected on Friday.

American Megan Guarnier won stage 1 with a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds to make the 117 km (72.7 mile) trip. The former Bay Area resident is on the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team out of Holland.

Professional cyclists start arriving in Lake Tahoe for two stages of Amgen

Tyler and Cheryl Cannon, owners of Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, opened their doors Tuesday to two of the cycling teams in town for two stages of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM on May 11-12.

Volunteers sought for Amgen Women's Race in Lake Tahoe

The committee organizing Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM at Lake Tahoe, May 11-12 is looking for volunteers to help out in several areas.

Positions include course marshals, security and check-in. Marshals assist race staff and local law enforcement authorities along the route monitoring pedestrian traffic, road closures, and updating spectators as the race progresses. No experience is necessary.

Amgen Tour of California announced today that professional cycling will return to Lake Tahoe, May 11-12, 2017. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race will include the overall start and Stage 2 on consecutive days. With thousands of fans lining the streets of Santa Rosa, Team KATUSHA’s star sprinter Alexander Kristoff (NOR) catapulted to a stage win, his eighth of the season, by a rim over all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win record holder Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff, who had spent much of the 109.1-mile day in a breakaway. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease™ Women’s Race Empowered with SRAM also spent the day in Santa Rosa, with cycling’s winningest woman Marianne Vos (NED) cinching the victory for Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team.

Young fans line up to watch elite women cyclists in Thursday's Amgen

It's not every day that elite cyclists come to your hometown for an international race, so when they do, take advantage of it. Students from Bijou Community School walked to the corner of Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd. on Thursday to watch Stage 1 of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Race.

As the women raced by the young fans, they heard the chanting of "U.S.A" and the sounds of cowbells.

Skujins breaks away at finish line to win Stage 5 of Amgen in South Lake Tahoe

Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California is in the books. 24-year-old Toms Skujins from Latvia burst across the finish line at Heavenly Mountain Resort at the last second Thursday, edging out Adam De Vos of Canada and Xabier Zandio of Spain to take the win.

The day began as riders left Lodi at 50 feet above sea level, and crossed the finish line 130 miles later in South Lake Tahoe at 6,650 feet.

Countdown to Amgen: First Stage in the books, South Lake Tahoe on Thursday

It came down to the final moment of the race, and Peter Sagan emerged from the impressive field of sprinters as the winner of the San Diego Stage 1 during the Amgen Tour of California on Sunday, May 15.

Sagen, who rides for Tinkoff, was last year’s overall winner. This was his third victory of the season. Cannondale’s Wouter Wippert earned runner-up honors on the stage and Dylan Groenewegen of LottoNL – Jumbo took third at the end of the 105 mile stage in and around San Diego.

Amgen Tour for both men and women returns to South Lake Tahoe

Exciting news for South Lake Tahoe, the cycling community and local tourism today when it was announced that the Amgen Tour of California will be returning to the South Shore for both men's and women's events.

Professional cyclists will return to the lake for the men's Stage 5 finish and the women's Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.

Amgen Tour moves Southern California time trials due to snow

It appears that Lake Tahoe isn't the only stop on the Amgen Tour of California to have snow issues. Friday's men's and women's time trials scheduled for Big Bear Lake have been moved due to a forecast of snow and low temperatures.

The Amgen Tour of California organizers have determined that race day conditions will not be safe for riders, teams, partners, fans or staff participating or attending the Individual Time Trial events scheduled for Friday, May 15 at Big Bear Lake.

Canadian Leah Kirchmann wins Stage 2 of Amgen Tour in SLT

People lined the 25-mile Amgen race course from Heavenly to Meyers on Saturday, all waiting to catch a glimpse of the top women cyclists as they quickly passed by.

There were great spectating opportunities, and many locals and visitors took advantage of them, from Ski Run Blvd, along Pioneer Trail to South Upper Truckee.

The course was much different that Friday's trip around the lake, but still a tough one with plenty of climbs, downhills and turns.

After two trips around the course, Canadian Leah Kirchmann emerged the victor, just edging out American Lauren Komanski.

Final kilometer told the story during Stage 1 of SLT Amgen race

"The way they're dropping off you'd think the Donner Party was back," were the words of the announcer as he reported on the racers heading up Keller Road during the final kilometer of Friday's Amgen race around Lake Tahoe. "There are bodies everywhere," he joked, commenting on the final uphill portion of the race just before the finish line.

After 73.5 miles, the last .6 mile separated the group of women who had stayed in a close pack as they spent three hours racing around the lake.

Fourteen international and national women's cycling teams were introduced to the public Thursday night during AMGEN opening night festivities in South Lake Tahoe. The field of racers includes Olympic champions as well as World and National champions.
