Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/16/2020 - 12:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are two locally owned and operated radio stations, KRLT FM and KOWL AM, that have served the Lake Tahoe area for 60 years (AM was first, then FM came 40 years ago).
General Manager and Owner Steve Harness took out a note with investors to buy the station from Cherry Creek Radio five years ago. On June 30, 2020, a $100,000 balloon payment on that note is due. While the stations' monthly overhead has stayed the same during the pandemic, their revenue has dropped by roughly 80 percent.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/06/2019 - 9:56amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An overflowing crowd in the City Council chambers Tuesday were present to hear, and speak on, the appeal of a South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission decision to approve a monopine cell tower at the corner of Ski Run Boulevard and Needle Peak Road.
But they will have to return on September 3 to speak.

Tahoe's Howie Nave headed to Vegas as inductee of Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 11:40amLake Tahoe radio host, standup comedian and emcee of the Improv at Harveys, Howie Nave is among 62 Nevada radio and television personalities and managers who will be inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame this Saturday in Las Vegas.
Nave, who has been with KRLT FM 93.9 as host of “Howie’s Morning Rush” at Lake Tahoe for nearly 15 years, will be inducted at the Four Seasons Hotel. He joins the ranks of more than 800 broadcasters from around Nevada who make up the Hall of Fame.
South Lake Tahoe radio station cancels Rush Limbaugh

The nationally syndicated show will be off the air as of this week.
New fireworks company for the South Lake Tahoe July 4th show

While many South Lake Tahoe fireworks fans might not even notice, this year's stunning "Lights on the Lake" pyrotechnical performance is now being created by world-renowned 'Fireworks by Grucci' out of New York.
Grucci is a sixth-generation family owned company who owns two Guinness World Records and have been putting on fireworks shows around the world since 1850. They are known as the "First Family of Fireworks."
Cherry Creek Radio selling KRLT-KOWL to station's manager
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/25/2015 - 5:54pmCherry Creek Radio has filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to sell South Lake Tahoe based KRLT-FM and KOWL-AM to current General Manager, Steve Harness and a group of investors.
"I put together a group of investors and secured financing to make it possible," Harness told South Tahoe Now. "I've put eight years of sweat equity into both stations and I did not want to see that work undone by new owners."

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 12/22/2014 - 5:02pmRecently the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, in conjunction with South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling, conducted a “drive and drop” at the LTVA’s California Visitors Center, and curbside collection on regular pick-up days. Once again we were overwhelmed by the generous response from our South Lake Tahoe community. Together we collected over 1,500 pounds of food and toys to benefit Christmas Cheer all Year, plus over $1,200 in cash, $1,000 of which was donated by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe.
Steve Harness Promoted to GM of South Lake Tahoe's KRLT and KOWL

Harness has been with the company for seven years, serving as their DJ, Program Director and Operations Manager. He brings 20 years of radio experience with him.
Owner Joe Schwartz said “It was important to us to hire form with-in for this position. We need somebody running those stations who is part of the Tahoe community for the long-run and that is Steve”.
