Like many residents and visitors of Lake Tahoe, I have had the good fortune of running, hiking, swimming, skiing, dining, lodging and otherwise living in and around Lake Tahoe nearly all of my life. Tahoe has played a vital role in the development of my most treasured relationship, with my wife Lisa, where we both learned to care for much more than ourselves, and where we were married 25 years ago on the west shore.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin expires at 4:00 a.m. Monday with most of the precipitation winding down by then other than a few lingering showers through 10:00 a.m. It`s unlikely to be snowing for the Monday morning commute, however, roads may still have snow and ice present.
Record low rainfall in October leads to just 10% of water supply requests fulfilled

With California off to a dry start for the water year, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced Tuesday an initial State Water Project (SWP) allocation of 10 percent of requested supplies for the 2021 water year.
Initial allocations are based on conservative assumptions regarding hydrology and factors such as reservoir storage. Allocations are reviewed monthly and may change based on snowpack and runoff information. They are typically finalized by May.

On June 10 the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center released findings from its annual Lake Tahoe Clarity Report, which showed average Lake clarity for 2019 was 62.7 feet, the second-smallest annual average depth recorded since systematic annual measurements began in 1968.
Jeff Marsolais leaves LTBMU and becomes new supervisor for Eldorado Forest

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - The former Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) forest supervisor has moved over to the same position with the Eldorado National Forest, replacing the retired Laurence Crabtree.
Jeff Marsolais came to Lake Tahoe in 2010, working several positions and for the past five years, had filled the top spot.
The Eldorado National Forest is welcoming back Jeff Marsolais, who will begin serving as the Eldorado’s new forest supervisor on June 22. Jeff worked on the Eldorado National Forest early in his career and is excited to return.
20th anniversary of Snapshot Day at Lake Tahoe

Friday evening brought thunderclaps and patchy showers to Lake Tahoe, adding to the flow of streams and rivers the following day as 40 participants collected water quality samples across Tahoe’s South Shore as part of Snapshot Day. This citizen science water quality monitoring event takes place every May and provides a moment-in-time look at the water quality and environmental health of the Tahoe-Truckee watershed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure will dominate and bring above normal temperatures through Wednesday. Rivers and streams will run faster as snow melts, but no flooding is expected. A low-pressure system will usher in breezy and cooler conditions for the last part of the week with an increasing potential for showers by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is warning residents that while cleaning surfaces with disinfecting wipes to reduce the spread of COVID-19 is encouraged, discarding them and paper towels in the toilet is not.

Last week our collective memories returned to that terrible November morning as a raging wildfire swept through Paradise, California. We woke that morning to images of wholesale devastation as fearsome winds drove racing flames from one town and one home to the next. We were horrified to watch videos of citizens running for their lives, desperately trying to escape the smoke and flames that were engulfing everything in their path. Eighty-five people lost their lives—the deadliest fire in California history— in what we now call the Camp Fire.
STPUD informs Alpine County they are ending recycled water agreement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Effective the end of November, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is ending an agreement with Alpine County regarding its recycled water operations.
STPUD has paid Alpine County an annual mitigation fee to address potential impacts caused by recycled water for 35 years, a fee that is approximately $100,000 per year.
STPUD says there have not been adverse impacts from the recycled water operations and the agreement is no longer necessary.

Warmer temps ahead for South Lake Tahoe; Rapid melting of snowpact expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will become very warm with highs near 80s in Lake Tahoe and above 90 degrees for most lower elevations Monday through Wednesday. Dry conditions are expected through Tuesday, then isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms will be possible from Wednesday through next weekend.
Annual Lake Tahoe report: 10.5 more feet of clarity in 2018

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.
In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

Sunny week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a while since the forecast had nothing but sunshine in it, but that is what is ahead for the Lake Tahoe Basin next week! Due to the warming temperatures, watch for increased flow in area streams and rivers due to the snowmelt.
For Monday and Tuesday, the northerly flow that started over the weekend will persist but gradually weaken as high-pressure noses into the region. The northerly flow will still be rather gusty Tuesday morning across area ridges but should diminish through the day.
Sierra snowpack at 200% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Under a misty rain, the fourth, and perhaps final, measurement of the snowpack in Philips, California for 2019 is complete, and it's good news from the Department of Water Resources (DWR).
Their manual survey recorded 106.5 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 51 inches, which is 200 percent of average for the Phillips location outside Sierra-at-Tahoe.
Statewide, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is 162 percent of average.

Public memorial for Judge Terrence Finney in South Lake Tahoe Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A public memorial for the first superior court judge in the community, the Honorable Terrence M. Finney, will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Department 3 of the South Lake Tahoe courthouse.
Finney passed away on November 7, 2018 at the age of 84.
Volunteers restore streambanks and protect native species to Keep Tahoe Blue

Almost 100 volunteers participated in the League to Save Lake Tahoe's 21st annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day on the first day of Fall, September 22, 2018. They restored crumbling stream banks, worked to protect native species and removed litter from Nevada Beach at Lake Tahoe.
“Hands-on restoration work is one of the most important actions we can take to Keep Tahoe Blue,” says Marilee Movius, the League’s community engagement manager, “and many hands make for lighter work to help out our busy land managers.”
Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An illegal and abandoned campfire near the Pacific Crest Trail ignited a fire on Wednesday evening.
Crews from USFS, Lake Valley Fire and Calfire were called to the 5:20 p.m. fire on September 19. They staged at the Echo Summit Caltrans maintenance yard on Highway 50, and when determined to be on Forest Service land, the Engine 42 crew from USFS hiked into the fire location and the others were on call in case needed.

Famous clarity of Lake Tahoe sharply drops

The epic clarity of Lake Tahoe was measured at an average of 59.7 feet in 2017, a 9.5 foot drop from the previous year and 10.3 feet lower than the five-year average according to the annual report compiled by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.
This measurement surpasses the previous lowest level of 64.1 feet which was recorded in 1997, but far below the record high of over 100 feet in the mid-1960s.

TERC talk at Lake Tahoe: The Last Straw

In advance of Earth Day, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will have a presentation on April 10 around the fact that 500 million straws used, and discarded, daily in the United States.
That is enough straws to wrap around the Earth's circumference 2.5 times a day.

Meet at Lake Tahoe Community College Aspen Room Saturday, May 19 at 9 am. Teams led by trained team leaders will then go out to local streams and rivers throughout South Tahoe to collect data to create a snapshot in time of water quality. The data collected can be used for restoration projects and overall watershed protection.
Wear layers, sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen. Be prepared to possibly wade in the water. Bring a reusable water bottle.

Free sandbags are available for residents ahead of wet storm

There is a very warm, wet storm heading to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada, bringing with is gusty winds and significant rains beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday. There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as many were enjoying sunny skies and temps in the 50s and 60s, Mother Nature is sending a bit of change to the area this week.
Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.
Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

USFS asks snowmobilers to protect the land and stay in areas with adequate snow

Snowmobilers are being asked to move to areas with adequate snow coverage for their activities and to stay away from bare dirt and patchy snow areas.
With the snowpack in the Sierra at very low levels, and in anticipation of a busy holiday weekend, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are informing snowmobile operators to also not ride across streams or over small trees or brush. Operating snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

Column: Conservation partnerships are an opportunity to bridge divides

Nearly 200 conservation professionals from around the country gathered back east this November to have a strategic dialogue about the state of landscape-scale conservation. Lake Tahoe was featured at the forum for the region’s cooperative restoration initiatives, and it was an honor to share the stage with such high-caliber conservation thought leaders.

They were builders, doctors, lawyers and teachers
Our Dad, he ran the B of A
They were leaders, doers, big picture seers
The biggest picture of all they saw it every day
Mt. Tallac stood vigil
Tahoe lies blue and clear
In meadows the streams ran swift and clean
The way they had for millions of years
They knew they had to protect it
They fought for it those women and men
I'm proud our Dad Tom Regan he was one of them
But there were clear-cutters, dealers, dice-rollers
Passing through try'na turn a quick buck
