On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to: 1) Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032 and 2) Reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040, and reduce municipal emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

When we look at our community’s health, there are many other factors that determine a person’s ability to thrive - beyond health care services. Social determinants of health are defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as the conditions in places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect outcomes for health and quality of life. These determinants are complex, and can be deeply rooted; including income and employment opportunities, housing instability, food insecurity, family and social support, transportation, and adverse life effects.

One of priorities established by the Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) during the pandemic has been to help local businesses find ways to affordably obtain required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Through its participation in the El Dorado County Business Protection Workgroup, TPC has been able to help businesses find funding and develops plans to stay open through the impacts of COVID-19. They now have been able to procure the PPE needed to meet safety guidelines, protect employees and customers, and stay open for business.

Heidi Hill Drum, CEO of the Tahoe Prosperity Center, has stepped in to serve as co-chair of the California Stewardship Network, an alliance of regional economic leaders throughout the state, which are instrumental in leading economic recovery efforts in their respective regions.

Drum, who lives on the South Shore, will serve alongside Oscar Chavez, assistant director of the Sonoma County Department of Human Services.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center will be holding a free and brief webinar on Financial Literacy in light of the financial impact Covid-19 is having on households in the Lake Tahoe community.

The webinar will be this Thursday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m. It is open to all residents in the Tahoe Basin that are interested in learning how to create or refine their personal budgeting skills.

The focus will be on how to track income versus expenses and will provide some simple tools and resources to help you create your own budget and spending plan.

The 2020 Expo has been canceled. They plan on returning in March 2021.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The annual Tahoe Chamber Business EXPO will be held on Friday, May 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe. It was originally scheduled for March 27 but postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

The AlertTahoe 11-camera system surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin has been credited for detecting its 57th fire since first being installed in 2013.

As the Kincade Fire in Sonoma and the Easy Fire in Southern California raged, a camera in Lake Tahoe spotted a small fire on the West Shore. Fire crews were able to respond and quickly put it out.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) is facilitating a South Shore Housing Needs Assessment and Action Plan. They will be hosting two open houses at the Hard Rock in Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, November 12 to discuss results and to learn more about the housing needs of the South Shore. Participants can also share ideas on how TPC can provide more homes, help employees find and get into homes, improve the condition of homes, and anything else related to housing.

The open houses will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What would happen if fire-fighting agencies could stop a wildfire before it gains momentum and wipes out homes, communities and/or forests? That is being answered with well over 100 fire cameras now in place across the west, all because of foresight of Dr. Graham Kent, the Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is just over a week left to answer a few questions on the Tahoe Prosperity Center's housing survey. LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) has been chosen as the charity that could win $125,000 during this year's Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin challenge during the American Century Championship on Friday. A total of $250,000 is on the line during this annual contest that brings together 15 of the tournament’s most popular personalities to compete. If a contestant makes a hole-in-one, the $250,000 grand prize will be split with $125,000 going home with the celebrity, and $125,000 to TPC.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A vacant one-half acre lot on Emerald Bay Road at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe will soon become an “affordable by design” housing project and could be the site of tiny houses. At Thursday's California Tahoe Conservancy meeting they announced their intent to sell one of its developable properties to Dinsmore Sierra who will finance and build the project which is across the street from Alpina Cafe.

STATELINE, Nev. - A standing room only crowd was in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board room on October 25, 2018 for an updated presentation, and plans for the next steps, of the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, commonly known as the Loop Road. It reroutes Highway 50 from its current location in front of Heavenly Village and the casinos to behind Raley's, the Village Center and Harrahs Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Prosperity Center once again is hosting the Tahoe Economic Summit, an event that delves into issues many locals are concerned with including housing, the economy, innovation, entrepreneurship and an educated workforce.

Last month this column focused on the faces of Tahoe’s housing crisis. This month we look at a few promising solutions from other tourist communities.

One example is the Town of Vail’s “Vail InDEED” program. Like Tahoe, the Town of Vail is constrained by a lack of available land and high construction costs. Development of new housing is slow and costly. The Vail InDEED program was created to deed restrict existing properties to create a market for locals only.

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) will host the 22nd Annual Lake Tahoe Summit at Sand Harbor State Park in Incline Village, Nevada on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Beach and park operations will be closed until 1:00 p.m. that day.

Lawmakers from Nevada and California will meet on the shores of Lake Tahoe to discuss how to protect a national treasure as it faces continued threats to water clarity, invasive species, wildfire and drought.

The public is invited to attend the spring meeting of Progress for Tahoe on Tuesday, June 5, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Mountain Lab, 3079 Harrison Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

There will be a presentation about the Tahoe Prosperity Center's Workforce Housing Project, a discussion on a new idea to start a rental matching program between second home owners and local workforce, and hear about microtransit for South Lake Tahoe/Stateline.
