South Lake Tahoe man dies at Lake Baron while walking dogs
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/30/2019 - 1:29pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 39-year-old South Lake Tahoe man drowned in Lake Baron in Meyers on Thanksgiving Day.
David Schmidt was walking his dogs Cheena and Oreo along with a friend's dog at Tahoe Paradise Park. According to close friends, it appears one of the dogs fell through the ice and David went to save him. David left his keys, wallet, phone and jacket on the shore and went onto the ice when he broke through. Friends said he would be too smart to just walk onto thin ice without a good reason.
Truckee Fire sells their airboat to Washoe County Hasty Team for $1
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/02/2019 - 2:24pmThe Truckee Fire Protection District sold their airboat used for in-the-water rescues to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Hasty Team for just one dollar. This important piece of equipment can be used for missions on shallow bodies of water such as Swan Lake and could also potentially be used to speed response time for ice rescues, particularly in areas where thin ice is an issue.
When the Truckee department acquired a new boat for their uses they transferred ownership to Washoe County who had borrowed the boat in the past for help at the Reno Air Races.
Mac the Naw: Topaz opener brings lots of catches, large mackinaws being caught at Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/14/2018 - 12:24amHello fellow anglers, welcome to the new year and may it bring you tighter lines. I can truly say the Topaz Lake fishing derby is off to a very good start.
On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.
Thinning ice around Lake Tahoe becoming a safety concern for humans and pets
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/20/2017 - 3:26pmWarming temperatures and the arrival of spring bring not only flowers and the appearance of grass to the Lake Tahoe Basin, but they also bring dangerous thin ice.
In an incident Friday, a local woman was out walking two dogs when they ran onto the ice which broke, and both dogs fell into the cold water at Cove East near the Tahoe Keys. With assistance by a nearby paddle boarder the dogs were rescued, but this brings to light how serious the thinning ice can be.
