Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada getting smoke from two California fires

Two large California fires are sending smoke into Lake Tahoe, Reno and the Carson Valley. For several days, smoke from the Ferguson Fire has filled the area skies, but today most of the smoke came from the one-day old Carr Fire.

The Ferguson Fire burning west of Yosemite continues to burn through rugged, hard to access terrain. Officials reported a 764-acre growth in the fire today for a total of 46,675 acres as of 6:00 p.m. Friday. Containment is at 29 percent.

First tornado warning issued for the Lake Tahoe basin; Waterspout and funnel cloud spotted

The National Weather Service (NSW) in Reno today issued their very first tornado warning for the Lake Tahoe basin.

At 3:45 p.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued first for the middle of Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook. At that time one of their team members saw a funnel cloud over Incline Village and sent in a photo, so the tornado warning was issued immediately.

Even though Wednesday's warning was the first for Lake Tahoe, there have been five issued for northwest Nevada since 2000 according to Scott McGuire of the NWS Forecast Office in Reno.

Tornado touched down in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park

A tornado warning for parts of El Dorado and Amador counties has been lifted, but the National Weather Service reports that a tornado did touch down in El Dorado Hills near Folsom Lake and in Cameron Park.

Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the tornado touched down in the Browns Ravine area and damage was reported in the area of Hill View Hidden Acres and Mormon Island drives, south of Green Valley Road, in El Dorado Hills about 3 p.m. and moved eastward also touching down in Cameron Park.

Rare water spout on Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe was treated to a rare weather occurrence Wednesday night as a water spout formed along the west shore of the lake.

The water spout, essentially a very weak tornado over water, formed near the mouth of Emerald Bay just after 9 p.m., according to Brett Kendall, brewmaster at nearby FOLK Brewing Co., who snapped a picture of the aqueous twister from the lake’s east shore.

New LTCC Earth Science Scholarship Honors Former Instructor

Lake Tahoe Community College has started a brand-new scholarship in honor of a former instructor who passed away in late May. The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.

This new Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC according to geology and earth science instructor Scott Valentine, who worked with Mr. Young’s parents to establish the scholarship.

S. Tahoe storm chaser dies in Oklahoma
