New Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High already big success
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/06/2017 - 11:16pmThe South Lake Tahoe community came together early in 2016 to raise money for a new Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High, and the investment is already paying huge dividends.
"This room is changing the culture of our school," said STHS Football Coach Louis Franklin. "Having a room like this allows each kid to reach their genetic potential."
Student athletes are getting stronger, injuries are down and they are able to maximize their potential on the court, the field, the pool, or whatever the venue is for their sport. Cheerleaders and dancers also utilize the facility.
Lake Tahoe Olympians to be honored at Gold Medal Gala
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/29/2016 - 5:44pmIts been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.
In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/24/2015 - 2:03pmSeveral skiers from the Lake Tahoe area were announced to the 2015/16 US Alpine Ski Team, including Olympians Julia Mancuso, Travis Ganong, Tim Jitloff and Marco Sullivan. Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Hall of Fame honors for former South Lake Tahoe orthopaedic surgeon

Richard Steadman, MD, will be inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Hall of Fame on Friday, July 10th, during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. AOSSM Hall of Famers are individuals in the sports medicine community who have contributed immensely and set themselves apart from others in the field.

North Lake Tahoe's Travis Ganong leads resurgent Americans

Ganong, then 24, had long been considered a rising star in speed events (he won the downhill and super-G national titles in 2010), but he hadn't figured out how to translate his potential to World Cup results. After debuting on the circuit in 2009, it took him three years and 39 races to crack the top 10.
Five Tahoe/Reno area skiers named to US Ski Team
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:43pmWorld Champions Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) headline a strong group of 26 athletes, 14 men and 12 women, named by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to compete in the 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships Feb. 2-15 in Vail/Beaver Creek on home turf. Joining them will be five-time medalist Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) as well as Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill winners Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) and Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT).
U.S. Ski Team prospects die in Austrian avalanche
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/05/2015 - 8:43pmSteve Berlack built a life around snow and skiing. He lived in Franconia, N.H. He taught at an exclusive ski academy – Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont.
His son, Ronnie, rose up the ski racing ranks, graduated from Burke, had recently made the U.S. "D" team and was still hoping to make it to the World Cup level within a few years.
But snow and skiing took Ronnie's life Monday.
Ronnie Berlack, 20, and another U.S. ski team developmental athlete, Bryce Astle, 19, of Sandy, Utah, were killed in an avalanche in Soelden, Austria.
Tahoe native, Dr. Alison Ganong, joins Tahoe Sports Medicine

The board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializes in interventional sports medicine and spine care.

Heavenly's Sho Kashima Named to 2015 Freestyle Skiing Team

The team will formally named in the fall during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, CO – home of the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center.

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/20/2014 - 11:38amThere are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.
Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
