Coast Guard shuts down illegal charter at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 12:02pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The U.S. Coast Guard has shut down an illegal charter boat operating in Lake Tahoe.
On Sunday, September 7, the crew of a 29-foot response boat from the Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe boarded the 48-foot pleasure craft, Cirque. On board were 19 passengers though the boat was not permitted to have six or more.
They discovered the following violations on the Cirque:
- Violation of 46 C.F.R. 176.100 (a) for not having a valid Certificate of Inspection
- Violation of 46 C.F.R 15.401(a) for not having an individual with an appropriate license

Tahoe Douglas Fire and US Coast Guard respond to call of boat on fire near Dollar Point, Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/21/2020 - 7:10amLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 43-year-old man was rescued from a burning boat on Lake Tahoe Monday evening.
Rescue boats on the lake, including those from the Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD), responded to the scene near Dollar Point on the North Shore.
A 26-foot Cobalt was on fire, carrying a reported 40 gallons of fuel onboard. The man on board was rescued by a Good Samaritan prior to the arrival of the rescue boats.

The Christina, a 65-foot yacht that once called Lake Tahoe home, is now an iconic art car that has been cruising along the playa in the Black Rock Desert. She is returning to Lake Tahoe during "Docked at Hard Rock" November 1-2.
Flipper Manchester, a South Lake Tahoe construction company owner, was originally hired to demolish the yacht that had been dry-docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina for years.

Boston man dies after diving into Lake Tahoe to assist distressed innertubers
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/08/2019 - 11:42pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Multiple agencies searched Lake Tahoe Saturday night into Sunday, looking for a man who dove into Lake Tahoe to assist two people who had fallen off an innertube.
27-year-old Sayen Sengupta from Boston, Massachusetts had been operating a rental boat with 13 passengers. The passengers told law enforcement the boat had been towing two people in an innertube when the two riders fell into the water and became distressed.
Sengupta dove into the water to assist the riders and he was last seen going towards them when he slipped underwater.

The two people were in a canoe that took on water for unknown reasons about 3/4 of a mile off the shore of South Lake Tahoe. They ended up in the water and were there for about ten minutes before a local boater got to them and pulled them out of the water. The Nevada Department of Wildlife had a boat on the water that reached the group, followed by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) boat. SLTPD got the pair off the local boater's boat and returned them to El Dorado Beach.

Local woodturner donates piece for Soroptimist charity auction
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/09/2019 - 10:49amSouth Lake Tahoe artist Malcolm Tibbetts has once again donated one of his famous woodturning creations to the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) Elegant Evening fundraising event on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
Bids on "Ovals in the Woods" are accepted online and bidders do not have to attend the event to participate.
Tibbetts left the Heavenly management team in 2002 to start a new career that would work within his longtime love of woodworking. He is now a full-time studio artist designing, engineering and creating amazing works of art in segmented woodturning.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office plans strong presence in Stateline on New Year's Eve

Due to the high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during this event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive. In past years, the road has closed anywhere from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Under the program, every motorized watercraft is inspected to ensure it is clean, drained, and dry and not carrying aquatic invasive species before launching at Tahoe. Thanks to diligent boaters and watercraft inspectors, no new aquatic invasive species have been detected in Lake Tahoe since the program began 10 years ago.
Five boaters near Kings Beach rescued after boat takes on water

The captain of the recreational vessel issued a distress call via VHF FM channel 16 around 9:30 p.m., reporting his boat was taking on water.
Lake Tahoe area boat inspection stations opening for 2018 season

The fight against aquatic invasive species (AIS) has gone on for the last ten years, and officials say a large part of their success in keeping the lake clear are the stations located around the lake.
Since 2018, Tahoe Resource Conservation District (RCD) inspectors have performed over 70,000 vessel inspections, decontaminated 32,576 of them using hot water, and have found hundreds of vessels containing foreign species such as mussels, snails and plant material.
First firefighting boat of its kind on Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/13/2017 - 9:46pmTahoe Douglas Fire Protection District christened Marine 24 Monday, giving Lake Tahoe its first year-round firefighting boat.
At a cost of almost $500,000, Marine 24 is able to fight fire from hoses on board as well as hooking up to pipes along lakefront homes in Douglas County and piping water from the lake into water tenders. The boat can send water 300 feet, but their main function will be to pump water into pipes at the shore that water tenders will hook up to.

South Lake Tahoe fire stations stocked with loaner life jackets

It has been a deadly year on the lake, and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) department has started a new program to help save lives in the future.
California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has partnered with SLTFR in making life jackets available to the public on a loan basis. They have infant, child and adult sizes.

"People are very excited to get on the water," said Edwin Lyngar, Nevada Department of Wildlife's (NDOW) Water Educator. "Take safety precautions as you can't depend on luck."
Lyngar as well as both California and Nevada water safety experts were at Sand Harbor last week to inform the public about how easy it is to be safe on the water.

Possession and or discharge of fireworks is unlawful and will not be tolerated. Persons found in violation of the fireworks ordinance face criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000.00 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period of up to six months.
Boating safety from the Coast Guard

All boaters and beach goers are encouraged to be aware of boat traffic, prepare for potential hazards and keep advised of weather changes through the National Weather Service. Winds are supposed to be calm on Lake Tahoe this weekend, one should always check.
Preparations made to remove sunken sailboat from waters of South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 05/09/2017 - 11:24amThe sunken sailboat off the shore of South Lake Tahoe near El Dorado Beach will soon be a thing of the past. All winter long the mast of the sunken boat could be seen from the shore, and as water levels rose, the mast tipped over more.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in North Lake Tahoe, they had sent a crew to the boat during the winter to document and verify the sinking, retrieved the vessel number and made contact with its owner. USCG said they also made the information public so boaters would be forewarned of the hazard.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat

The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).
Law enforcement prepares for thousands of revelers at Stateline

Though Highway 50 through Stateline hasn't had to close until just before midnight the past two years, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is prepared to close it to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

Three rescued by Coast Guard on south end of Lake Tahoe

The initial call came in at 3:00 p.m. and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County Sheriffs Department responded to the scene.

Coast Guard continuing investigation into Tahoe Queen fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/17/2016 - 11:40amAn investigation team from the Coast Guard is continuing their investigation into Tuesday's fire on board the Tahoe Queen, which suffered severe damage while it was docked at the pier at the Zephyr Cove Marina on Lake Tahoe's South Shore.
At this point they have not completed their investigation and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 8:12amZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.
"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."
Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.
Man dies in Lake Tahoe after jet skiing accident
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/14/2016 - 10:02amA 22-year-old man from Oakland, Calif., drowned off the shore of South Lake Tahoe on Saturday after a jet skiing accident.
At 6:10 p.m. August 13, a person at the Timber Cover Marina reported an over due jet skier. Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to the pier where they learned two men had been thrown off a rented jet ski after hitting a wave about 100 yards off the the marina. One man was able to swim back to the jet ski, but the other man, Raeshon Williams, did not. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.
Countdown to American Century Championship: Celebrity autographed Vessel bags for charity

Vessel is teaming up with the tournament for the third year to raise money for charity through an online auction of premium golf bags autographed by the 90 participants competing in the annual celebrity tournament at Lake Tahoe, which starts TUesday at Edgewood Tahoe.

Boating under the influence focus of Lake Tahoe campaign this weekend
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/20/2016 - 8:20pmAs the summer recreational boating season gets into full swing, several law enforcement agencies are ramping up enforcement of boating under the influence laws on Lake Tahoe and other bodies of water. This is all part of a national safety campaign that begins this weekend, June 25 and 26 to heighten awareness and enforcement. Operation Dry Water focuses on deterring boaters from boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Volunteers needed at CA State Parks and UC Davis Environmental Center

Park Champions is having their first workday at Ed Z'Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Thursday, June 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to remove invasive plants in order to restore habitat for the birds and the bees. Tools, training and snacks provided. The Sierra State Parks Foundation will also offer volunteers a free guided tour.
Electrofishing project helps both hungry and Lake Tahoe nearshore

In the first three years of a cooperative pilot program between the University of Nevada Reno and California Fish and Wildlife, unwanted fish have been donated to needy families.

Tahoe Queen gets stuck: 258 passengers transported to safety
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/04/2014 - 7:39pmWhat started off as a leisurely 90 minute cruise on the Tahoe Queen turned into quite the adventure for passengers on board Monday afternoon.
The boat was about 30 minutes into its Emerald Bay cruise when it became stuck on a sandbar. At about 3:30 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Department received a call that the Tahoe Queen was stuck off the Regan Beach shore. It is not known at this time why emergency personnel weren't called to the scene until 90 minutes after the Tahoe Queen got stuck.

Drunk and Unsafe Boaters Targeted During This Weekend's Operation Dry Water

Operation Dry Water is an annual nationwide effort to highlight the risks and dangers of operating boats under the influence. The stepped up enforcement raises awareness of operating boats under the influence of alcohol or drugs in advance of the Fourth of July holiday.
