South Lake Tahoe knows how to throw a holiday bash and the one planned this Friday is sure to bring smiles, thrills and some welcome bliss after the weekend's series of storms.
The annual Community Winter Tree Lighting will be Friday at the California Visitor Center, 3066 Lake Tahoe Blvd. South Lake Tahoe and runs from 5 to 7 p.m.
Artist Cathy McClelland featured on Tahoe Culture Collectible Sticker 6

Cathy’s depiction of a Tahoe bear standing in an aspen grove of cascading leaves is playfully symbolic of our shared acceptance of this magical season of change with our bears and wildlife. The painting speaks to the healing power of Bear, and the peace that comes from acceptance. Only 1,000 of the collectible stickers are available at local shops.

Two more chipmunks test positive for plague in South Lake Tahoe area
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 10/26/2012 - 4:22pmThe El Dorado County Department of Environmental Health was notified this week by the California Department of Public Health that two additional chipmunks in the South Lake Tahoe area have tested positive for plague. One of the chipmunks was found in the Tallac Historic Site area and one was near the U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

Chipmunk tests positive for plague, Forest Service issues warning for South Shore Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 10/10/2012 - 12:58pmVisitors to recreation sites around South Lake Tahoe should to take precautions against the bubonic plague after a chipmunk found at Taylor Creek Visitor Center tested positive for the disease, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit reports.
The California Department of Public Health has recommended the Forest Service and its concessionaire post warning signage in the area of Taylor Creek Visitor Center, the Tallac Historic Site, and Camp Richardson Resort explaining how the disease is transmitted, the symptoms and how to prevent infection. The Forest Service is advising its staff and visitors to report any sick or dead animals immediately.

Some Forest Service facilities around Lake Tahoe will close for the season

Campgrounds and day-use areas traditionally close around mid-October. While forest roads typically close around mid-November, you may consult the Motor Vehicle Use Map for specific dates by going here. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center will remain open through October.

Saturday is the Great Sierra River Cleanup with more than 11,200 volunteers joining together to scour watersheds throughout the Sierra Nevada. Hundreds of community groups will spread across 22 counties and 1,052 river miles to pull appliances, cigarette butts, beverage cans, baby diapers, tires, furniture, and more from the rivers and streams that supply the State of California with 65 percent of its water. This effort, in partnership with the California Coastal Cleanup Day, serves to promote good stewardship on all of our waterways, from the source to the sea.

Celebrate Smokey Bear's birthday with a Lake Tahoe party

“Sign Smokey’s birthday card, sing to Smokey and learn more about Smokey’s message and origin,” said Ranger Jean Norman. “Cake will be provided until it’s all gone!” The party will be held on the patio at the Visitor Center.

Beach benefit for South Shore Lake Tahoe local Sean Riley set for August 15

In May, local community member Sean Riley suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a succession of blackouts and falls. A Beach Bash Benefit is being held to help offset Sean’s medical expenses on Wednesday, August 15, 5-8 p.m., at Zephyr Cove Resort.
Sean is an off-road tour guide for Lake Tahoe Adventures and his wife, Georgette, works for the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Tahoe Chamber. Sean has been hospitalized since May and came home this week and is now under 24-hour care. He is doing better, but does have some issues with comprehension and memory as a result of the injury, and has a long road to recovery requiring extensive therapy, home supervision and care.

The programs are sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization that works with the Forest Service to conduct interpretive and environmental education programs in the Tahoe. Donations to the Tahoe Heritage Foundation are welcomed.

The Summer Keynote Speaker Series at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center continues every Thursday evening through August at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management unit reminds folks that having fireworks of any kind — and sparklers are considered fireworks — is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Campfires are not permitted on Forest Service beaches or in the general forest. For Wednesday, July 4, 2012, only, personal barbecues are allowed at Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches but are not permitted on any other Forest Service beaches or in the general forest.
Revisiting South Lake Tahoe's attempt at a bicycling world record

Mountain Milers Donate $7,050 to Tahoe Heritage Foundation

The running club raised the money during the 2011 Kokanee Salmon Run. These funds will be used to support next year's Kokanee Salmon Festival and the college internship summer program at Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

Forest Service, other agencies respond to Taylor Creek spill

The U. S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other local agencies are continuing investigation and clean-up of a small spill of an unknown substance into Taylor Creek near the Forest Service Visitor Center on Hwy. 89. The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board obtained water samples from the area this morning. Results may be available by tomorrow and will help determine whether additional clean-up is necessary.
