Al Tahoe Firewise Community volunteers to perform property assessments
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/20/2020 - 9:11amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the support of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR), the Al Tahoe neighborhood has begun the process of becoming a certified Firewise USA ® recognized neighborhood.
As part of the application process, SLTFR and Al Tahoe community volunteers will be walking in the Al Tahoe neighborhood October 27-30 and performing random wildfire risk assessment/evaluations on 20 percent of the 1520 properties from the street.
The volunteers will have bright yellow vests on so they can be easily identified

Zephyr Fire Crew gets a permanent home
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/01/2015 - 5:46pmThe Zephyr Fire Crew no longer has to call the old landfill on Upper Kingsbury Grade's Logging Road Lane as their home. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department's wildland fire/fuels reduction team was officially welcomed into new digs with an open house this week. The Tahoe Chamber was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, but it wasn't any normal ribbon. Zephyr Fire crew members cut through a wooden ribbon with a chainsaw.
Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Fire Crew celebrates new home with Open House
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/24/2015 - 8:37pmTahoe Douglas Fire Protection District recently purchased new crew facility Station #22, which will act as quarters for the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew. The public is invited to tour the new facility and celebrate the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew on Tuesday, July 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tahoe Chamber will officiate a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Alpine County fire figures updated again: 16,543 acres burned

The fire figures were updated this afternoon. At 8 a.m. they report almost 16,000 acres, then downsized a bit at noon to 13,562 after analyzing infrared reports. The 1:35 p.m. update is as follows:
The Washington Fire is actively burning. It is spreading due to both fuel-and-slope-driven forces and in some some drainages off of the East Fork Carson River. It has also spread to the north and to the east.
Fire is burning in hazardous and inaccessible terrain and approaching an increasing number of structures and impacting travel corridors.
Tahoe Douglas Fireman completes HAZMAT

Ghisletta of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department just completed a four week HAZMAT course, earning his HAZMAT Technician certification and a spot on the Quad County HazMat Team. This is a specialized team from Douglas, Central Lyon, Carson City and Storey Counties.
Ghisletta began his career with the fire district in 2008 as a seasonal Wildland Firefighter/Crew Foreman with the Zephyr Fire Crew. He attended paramedic school with REMSA in 2012 and was promoted to a firefighter/paramedic in 2013.
Fire Reported Near Kingsbury Middle School
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 2:17pm7:45 pm update: According to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire District's Fire Marshall, the cause of the fire by Kingsbury Middle School was human caused and is under investigation. Due to quick response by the Zephyr Fire Crew and Tahoe Douglas Firefighters, along with favorable weather, the fire only burned a 50' x 50' area. A resident in the area, Dr. Jeff Behar, rode his bike to the scene when he saw the smoke and found the crews distinguishing the fire and provided South Tahoe Now with photos.

Clear out the combustibles from your yard and drop them off for free at the kickoff event being held for “Compost Your Combustibles 2014” at
Heavenly Boulder parking lot this Saturday, May 24th in recognition of Wildfire Awareness Month.” Drop off days will be held through the first Saturday in August.
Rake and remove pine needles and yard combustible waste to prepare your home in the case of wildfire.
Fundraiser Being Held for Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick

Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick has been battling Guillain Barre Syndrome since becoming ill while fighting a wild land fire in Elko, Nevada in June. He has been hospitalized since.
An evening of fundraising to help Kyle in his fight of the disease is being held on Friday, December 6 at Himmel Haus Restaurant and Bar in South Lake Tahoe. There will be a German dinner of Bratwurst and Spaetzel, drinks and live music as well as a silent auction. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The doors will open at 5 pm with the dinner at 6 pm.
