Movie Review: The Meg opens in theaters August 10

Let me just say right off the top no, it's not another ripoff of 1975's "Jaws" (although I did think that way when I first saw the trailer). Oh sure there are some parallels taking place in the summer, a huge shark (this one is prehistoric though) and yes, they needed a bigger boat too. That said "The Meg" does stand on its own with the trifecta elements of sarcastic humor, a long standing feud between former friends and of course, a love interest complete with a little girl (played by Shuya Sophia Cai) who at times steals the scenes like most little kids do).

Help requested in finding missing dog in South Lake Tahoe

A Las Vegas woman who was on vacation on the South Shore last weekend is asking for the public's help in finding her dog Coco, a four-pound chihuahua.

Perseid Meteor Shower to peak nights of August 11 and 12

According to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke, the Perseids are perhaps the most popular meteor shower of the year; and this year, they'll be the best shower of the year. This year during peak people should see about 60-70 meteors per hour, but in outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour. The meteor shower's peak will be visible both the nights of Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 12-13, Cooke said, but he's inclined this year to lean toward the night of Aug. 12-13 for the better show. (Both, however, should be spectacular.)
