Highway 50 west from South Lake Tahoe will remain closed. The Caltrans team is up against a mudslide the is uncontrollable at post mile 50, two miles east of Kyburz. It is a mountain that is made out of a sand dune and crews are trucking out 10 cubic yards of mud/sand at a time, but it continues to flow according to Steve Nelson of Caltrans.

The road is not stable, and with rain coming Thursday, Caltrans is watching the hill carefully. They will reevaluate the situation at noon on Wednesday.

There are still other routes open to South Lake Tahoe:

From Sacramento/Northern California take I-80 E to CA-89 S (Emerald Bay Road) to South Lake Tahoe.

From Sacramento/Northern California take CA-16 E to CA-49 N to CA-88 E past Kirkwood to CA 89 N into South Lake Tahoe.

To access South Shore from Reno, Carson City, and Carson Valley Kingsbury SR 207 is open.
