Lake Tahoe school and college boards to have joint session

Event Date:
March 22, 2016 - 6:00pm

The Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District Boards of Trustees will hold the annual joint meeting on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the college's board room, starting at 6:00 p.m.

During the meeting, discussions will be held on several common agenda items.

South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Field Lighting

When Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) advocated for a general obligation bond (Measure F), the language included exterior field lighting and community field enhancements. This language was included because LTCC and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) staff began discussions about creating a lighting project at the South Tahoe Middle School with Measure F funding. The Chief Executive Officers met and pledged to work together to not duplicate facilities and to leverage public taxpayer dollars to ensure maximum benefit.

Adult Education Block Grant Update

The passage of AB104 allocated $500 million for implementing the plans created in AB86. Originally, the Lake Tahoe Adult Education Consortium was awarded $750,000 for its work in the 2015/2016 fiscal year. After discussions with the consortium, Alpine County was added with an additional $75,000 to fund programming through the Alpine County Unified School District bringing the total consortium allocation to $850,000.

Dual Enrollment Update

This year, LTCC and South Tahoe High School launched a dual enrollment program that allows students to earn both high school and college credit for select coursework. Bob Grant, Sue Gochis, and Virginia Berry will update the Boards on the pilot offering of the “Get Focused… Stay Focused!” curriculum as well as plans for awarding dual credit for the follow-up modules and Career and Technical Education (CTE) coursework.

Elementary Teacher Education Transfer Degree Update

LTCC faculty, staff and administration identified the Elementary Teacher Education Transfer Degree as an area of need for local students expressing interest in teaching, as a benefit to the LTUSD in its efforts to find and attract local teachers, and as a transfer degree that LTCC could offer in order to provide local students with a pathway degree for transfer to the California State University (CSU) system.

Capture Rates - South Tahoe High School to Lake Tahoe Community College

The STHS to LTCC capture rates are presented as part of an ongoing conversation between the LTUSD and the LTCC. This report represents collaboration between LTCC and LTUSD to share data and understand the post-secondary education trends and needs of local high school graduates. Of note, college enrollments appear to be flat or in decline for both Districts.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the boards will reconvene to their respective board rooms to meet indiviually, with LTUSD trustees heading back to their own board room.

The LTCC board room is located on the campus at 100 College Way, South Lake Tahoe.
The LTUSD board room is located 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.
