Douglas County Sheriff's Office: Gardnerville man fatally shot was attempting a home invasion

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified a 36-year-old Gardnerville man who died Saturday from apparent gunshot wounds.

Joshua McCarthy, 36, was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with a homeowner in the 1400 block of Bumblebee Drive while attempting a home invasion, during which the homeowner shot McCarthy, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release.

McCarthy was not known to the homeowner.

Several witnesses stated there was an initial physical confrontation between McCarthy and another citizen at a separate residence, prior to the shooting incident, according to DCSO.

These witnesses also indicate McCarthy had been consuming heavy amounts of alcohol prior to both incidents. McCarthy left the residence where the first physical confrontation took place and a short time later the shooting incident occurred, according to a DCSO news release.

The investigation indicates that this was an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community. This investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to contact Investigator Scott Battcher at 775-782-9905.

At 9:31 p.m. on March 21, 2020, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of several gunshots in the area of the 1400 block of Bumblebee Dr, Gardnerville. DCSO arrived on scene to find McCarthy dead of gunshot wounds. All involved parties were detained for the investigation.
