Lake Tahoe Community College Speaker Series: Dr. Jamie Orr and 3-D Printing:

Event Date:
May 25, 2016 - 6:00pm

Can you make a homemade pizza with a 3-D printer? A gun? A movie prop? An iPhone case?

The answer is "yes" and you can find out about the endless possibilities of printing with a 3-D printer, and what its potential is in the future at the next Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation's Speaker Spotlight Series.

On Wednesday, May 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the school's Aspen Board Room, Dr. Jamie Orr will discuss the current and future uses of 3-D printing in the fields of technology, art, medicine, and more. She’ll explore what 3-D printing is, how it works, and what sorts of items can be created via a 3-D printer.

This is a free event, and the entire community is welcome.

Dr. Orr is an entrepreneur, physicist, and educator with expertise across a wide range of technical fields. She is a co-founder and CEO of Tahoe Mountain Lab, South Lake Tahoe's co-working space and innovation hub. Dr. Orr received her B.S. in physics from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She also earned an M.S. in experimental condensed matter physics, studying the fabrication and characterization of magnetic nanostructures. She earned her Ph.D in theoretical physics from U.C. Davis. As an instructor, Dr. Orr developed research and curricular programs in renewable energy technology and efficiency, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and 3-D printing.

The LTCC Foundation’s Speaker Spotlight Series brings faculty and academic experts from LTCC and other colleges and universities to South Lake Tahoe to share their knowledge and experiences with local students, and to encourage youth to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology and math. The Speaker Spotlight Series is made possible by a generous donation from community members Bob and Cathy Cliff.
