Opening weekend for Cabaret at Lake Tahoe Community College

Event Date:
June 11, 2016 (All day)

The smash-hit Broadway musical Cabaret hits the Duke Theatre stage at Lake Tahoe Community College with seven performances June 10-19, 2016.

The college's Theatre Arts Department presents the Tony Award-winning musical with with music and lyrics by the Broadway powerhouse team of John Kander and Fred Ebb.

Cabaret takes place in 1930, with American writer Cliff Bradshaw arriving in Berlin to search for excitement and “something to write about.” He visits the seedy Kit Kat Klub, where the enigmatic Emcee, the enticing but self-absorbed singer Sally Bowles, and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd and encourage them to leave their troubles outside. A complicated romance develops between Cliff and Sally against the backdrop of the rise of the Nazi party. As the two pursue their pleasure, the world outside the Klub begins to splinter. Sally and Cliff are faced with a choice: abandon themselves to the pleasures promised by the cabaret, or open their eyes and face Germany’s coming storm.

LTCC’s version of Cabaret mirrors the ground-breaking 1998 revival on Broadway starring Alan Cummings and Natasha Richardson. That production closely follows the play, written by John Van Druten, which was based on original stories written by Christopher Isherwood. This production vividly portrays the anti-Semitism and repression that marked the rise of the Third Reich. It also features a backdrop of risqué entertainment, jagged choreography, and raw sensuality. Due to its adult content, this production is not recommended for children under the age of 18.

During its six-year run on Broadway, the production brought to the New York stage the raunchy glamour of the Kit Kat Club and new songs from the film version, including “Money” and “Maybe This Time.” It also contains other classics such as “Willkommen,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and, of course, “Cabaret.”

Performances of Cabaret are Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11 at 8 p.m., and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 16, 17, and 18 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are June 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, groups of eight or more, students with a valid student I.D., and children under 13.
