Longest Day of Golf raises funds for South Lake Tahoe Cancer League

From sunup to sundown, a field of 11 golfers hit the links at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course Thursday to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League.

The Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe has sponsored the Longest Day of Golf for thirteen years. Lodge members spend the day driving golf carts, keeping the water and food flowing for the golfers, and helping to raise funds for charity.

Mary Luckel organizes the Longest Day of Golf each year, getting volunteers together as well as the golfers. In 2017, the day of golf raised $9,462 for the Cancer League. Prior to this year, golfers in the day long event have raised $125,328.82 for the non-profit to use towards transportation and grants for local cancer patients.

Golfers included El Dorado County Child Support Division, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Golf, the Moose Lodge and community: Eric Burkett, Don Semon, Ron Ladage, Adam Perry, Mary Luckel, Rus Wilson, Kathy Wells, Kevin Sommerfeld, Bailey Sommerfeld, John Rice and Darrell Schue.

Donations to make the day successful came from Blue Zone Sports, Holiday Market, Blue Dog Pizza and Lake Tahoe Pizza.

The goal this year was to have golfers play over 135 holes and raise $12,000. While the money is still being tallied, the golfer with the most stamina played 126 holes.

Even though the Longest Day of Golf is over, people can still donate to the event by sending a check to the SLT Cancer League at P.O. Box 17962, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96151. Please note in the memo line the donation is for Longest Day of Golf.
