Moose Lodge raises $14,000 for South Lake Tahoe Cancer League during Longest Day of Golf

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From sunup to sundown, golfers recently hit the links at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League. Sponsored by the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe for 14 years, the Longest Day of Golf raised $14,000 to go to help local cancer patients.

On Friday a check was presented by tournament organizer Mary Luckel to the Cancer League during a barbeque at the Moose Lodge. The men and women of the Moose Lodge, the golf course and many local businesses helped the league during their Longest Day of Golf.

Funds raised stay in the South Lake Tahoe community and help get patients to appointments in Reno, Carson City, Truckee and Sacramento since their needed cancer treatment facilities are all out of town. Volunteer drivers will transport the patients and get reimbursed for gas.

They also give away money to cancer patients. Currently, they are giving out 40 grants a month in the amount of $250 each to those patients.

There is a growing number of local people who the league is helping and in the last 30 years they have not raised complete reimbursement costs to the drivers, said outgoing SLT Cancer League President Joann Conner.

"They need this lifeline to get treatment," said Conner of the driver's service.

Drivers log over 100,000 miles a year for South Lake Tahoe residents, many of those rounds trips are 120 miles but some are as much as 240 miles.

More golfers and sponsors are needed next year for the Longest Day of Golf. The League said they'd love to see law enforcement, casino executives and others take part in a day where up to 125 holes of golf can be completed.

Conner is moving from the area and the presidential torch has been passed to Gary Stanton. He said the nonprofit bought Conner's special event company to help them raise more money for the local patients.

"We're exploding in the need for resources for cancer patients," said Conner. She said they are seeing a growth in local patients dealing with a disease that does not discriminate as they see all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
