Back-to-back American Century Championship wins for Tony Romo in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Tony Romo is the champ once again in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, becoming the fourth player to successfully defend their title at the celebrity tournament.

The former Dallas Cowboy quarterback and current CBS analyst ended the tournament with a 71 in the modified Stableford scoring system. Romo topped three-time winner Mark Mulder by ten points and third place finisher Mardy Fish by 14.

Romo entered the final round with a nine-point lead and says he felt really good about his game, especially as he started the back nine.

"Enjoy the day and don't do anything silly," said Romo on what he told himself before the day's round.

When he won in 2018 he said the final round wasn't as relaxing as every shot mattered. "Today it felt fun," he said.

In 2017 he scored a 47 at the ACC, in 2018 a 71.

"At the end of 2017, I hired a coach and made it systematic. I dug deeper and learned the nuances of the game," said Romo.

Romo said he made a change in his game a few weeks ago and he's been playing great golf ever since.

"I do know I'm improving," added Romo. "You keep trying to figure yourself out and figure your game out. It's a great game!"

Since Romo is an amateur player he is giving the $125,000 prize money to the tournament's official charity, the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, which was started by American Century's founder James Stowers.

When asked what he thought of a three-peat in 2020, Romo said: "it's too early to think about that."

He was flying back home right after the tournament and is looking forward to spending time with his sons Jones, Hawkins and Rivers who didn't make the trip to Tahoe.

"I think I've earned a day off of golf," said a smiling Romo.
