November ballot filling up: Nine candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council

This story has been updated to include Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees candidates.

Nine South Lake Tahoe residents have qualified to run in November and thrown in their hats for three open seats on City Council.

The three incumbents, Mayor Wendy David, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis and Councilman Austin Sass will all be running for reelection. They will be joined by some veterans of local politics as well as newcomers.

Five of the challengers will be Tamara Wallace, director of the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce; Bruce Grego, a local attorney and former councilman; Patrick Jarrett, a local who ran for office two years ago; Cody Bass, owner of Tahoe Wellness Cooperative; and Hal Cole, a building contractor and former mayor and councilman.

City Hall confirmed Devin Middlebrook, the Sustainability Program Coordinator for TRPA, turned in his paperwork but he was not included in Friday's El Dorado County Election's Department list of candidates.

In November, South Lake Tahoe voters will also be deciding who will take the City Clerk position opened by the retired of Susan Alessi. It will either be Ellen Palazzo or Susan Blankenship, both who have filled the assistant clerk position in South Lake Tahoe. City Treasurer David Olivo appears to be running unopposed.

Two incumbents and two newcomers to the political scene will vie for seats on the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees. Kerry David is unopposed for his Area 1 seat as is Jeff Cowan for his Area 2 seat. Incumbent Michelle Sweeney is not running for reelection for Area 5. Retired hospital director Michael Marini and Deputy District Attorney Tony Sears are running for her seat.

Brian Hogan will be running for the Lake Valley Fire Protection District Seat he was appointed to. The two incumbents on the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District board of directors, Joseph Cardinale and Peter Nelligan are running unopposed.

The ballot will be full for the three open seats on the South Tahoe Public Utility District Board. The three incumbents Chris Cefalu, Duane Wallace and James Jones will be running for reelection and they will be joined by Nick Exline, and former STPUD board members Louis Pierini and Eric Schaefer.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board President Barbara Bannar is running unopposed for reelection. Angela Swanson will not seek a return to her board seat and so far, no candidates have jumped in the ring. Since the incumbent in this case is not seeking reelection the open period for those interested have until August 15 to turn in paperwork.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel and her challenger Ken Curtzwiler survived the primary in June and will face off again in November.
