For over 50 years, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Mason has been entertaining crowds, from his days as a founding member of Traffic, to his current days touring the world with his band.
He'll be on the South Shore Sunday night as he stops by Harrah's Tahoe as part of his "Alone Together" tour.
Mason took time this week to talk to South Tahoe Now as he traveled from Oregon to Washington, both stops on his tour before heading to South Lake Tahoe.
You could say Mason is coming home this weekend. Once a resident of Alpine Meadows, Mason now splits his time between his homes in Carson City and on the island of Maui when not on tour (which is over 100 concerts/200 days a year).
The Alone Together tour is named after his first solo album which was released in 1970. This classic rock album contains eight classics, including one of Mason's biggest hits, Only You Know and I Know. His music has endured for six decades and Mason doesn't appear to be slowing down.
The 71-year-old has a long list of hits, many of which he'll be playing at Harrah's on Sunday. Even though his tour is named after his first album, fans can expect songs from his 13 solo albums as well as songs from his time with Traffic. Mason also played with, or recorded duets with, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, George Harrison, Phoebe Snow and others.
His long list of hits include Feelin’ Alright, Only You Know And I Know, Let it Go Let It Flow, We Just Disagree, All Along The Watchtower, World In Changes, Shouldn’t Have Took More Than you Gave and Show me Some Affection.
As an 18-year-old, Mason teamed up with, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form the legendary band Traffic, who had a profound affect on the genre of rock and roll.
They released their first album, Mr. Fantasy, in December 1967.
When asked if he had any favorite venues from all his played over the last 50 years, Mason said he is just happy to be somewhere with a great audience.
His audience on Sunday can expect music from the Alone Together album, some Traffic songs and some songs featuring the talented musicians he now plays with.
If he could put together a band with anyone, dead or alive, Mason said that band would include Paul McCartney on guitar, Al Jackson on drums, Will Lee on bass, rhythm guitarist Steve Cropper and Michael McDonald on Keyboards.
As an 18-year-old, Mason said he never thought about having a career that would take him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "I really wasn't thinking of time, just doing what I loved," he said of the early Traffic days.
In March of 2004, Mason and his Traffic band mates were inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Prince, George Harrison, Jackson Browne, ZZ Top and Bob Seger.
"It was nice to be recognized," said Mason. "That was an impressive line-up and experience."
Mason sees audiences of all ages these days, those that were fans when Alone Together was released as well as younger groups.
"If people are into great music, come see us," Mason said of his show on the South Shore October 1.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Harrah's South Shore Room. Some tickets are still available HERE.
