Mt. Tallac High School celebrates with community barbecue

Holly Greenough wasn't sure what to expect at Mt. Tallac High's first Family and Community Fair and Barbecue.

"I thought maybe five or six parents would come for our first year," said Greenough, the school's Director. Instead, 21 families and ten community members/groups participated.

"The kids were excited to bring their parents, and the parents were grateful," said Greenough.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services, Tahoe Turning Point, Live Violence Free, Family Resource Center, the El Dorado County Health Department, McKenny Vento, Early Head Start, and U.S. Immigration all had tables set up at the event to let the community know what resources are available to them in South Lake Tahoe. They were also joined by LTUSD school nurse Margaret McKean and counselor Natalie Collins.

The barbeque continues what Greenough and LTUSD counselor Amy Jackson have been trying to create at the continuation high school, with getting the school's focus towards careers and allowing their students to become more comfortable in the community.

Some of the participants comments given to Greenough:

"The BBQ on September 17th was a blast! It was full of great friends and great food. Thanks to Mr. Romero and Sam Giles (the grillers)" - Kyra

"Its pretty awesome to think that we are kinda family here." - Kathryn

"While the festivities were very enjoyable, the most impressive sight, by far, was to observe such genuine caring interactions between your faculty and heir students. You are preparing them for a bright future, no matter what past or present struggles might be." - Doug and Darcy Wallace
