Bags will be on the school buses (schedule below) on Wednesdays when school is in session (no delivery December 23 and 30). When school resumes to in person instruction, this schedule will adjust to fit the need and school schedules.

Invasive species removal begins in Taylor Creek Marsh

The community is invited to attend the Tahoe Chamber’s 13th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards to honor South Shore businesses and individuals that have impacted the community for the better. In place of the annual awards dinner, winners will be announced in an awards show that is pre-filmed and broadcast on Lake Tahoe Television on November 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Valhalla's 25th annual Holiday Faire canceled for 2020

After a successful partnership with The Heritage Foundation to create a Winter Wanderland at the Tallac Historic Site last year, both organizations were excited about expanding the event this year. Unfortunately, due to the size of the Grand Hall and limits on capacity, Valhalla Tahoe’s Board of Directors have been forced to cancel the event.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District revamps food delivery bus schedule
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/12/2020 - 8:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Meal Delivery schedule for Phase 1 Distance learning is being changed starting Monday, September 14. At the beginning of the school year there were seven buses and, based on figures from the first two weeks, routes have been adjusted and there are now five buses.
The buses are loaded with breakfasts and lunches and each student can stop by a bus stop or one of the four selected school sited to pick the meals up Monday-Friday (unless a school holiday).
Forests, campgrounds and day-use areas to close in California and Lake Tahoe Basin

With about four million 18-year-olds nation-wide able to vote in the November 3 election, local voting advocates are reaching out to first-time voters to help them register in South Lake Tahoe.
On Thursday, August 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., a group of volunteers will be at Regan Beach on the lawn to help get those first-time voters registered.
Bring identification and wear a mask.
Coordinator Holly Greenough, former principal at Tallac High School, use to registere students at the high school, but since her retirement and her group of volunteers moving, she changed venues.
South Lake Tahoe resident tests positive for plague, most likely from flea bite
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/17/2020 - 10:29amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for plague according to El Dorado County health officials. The individual is currently under the care of a medical professional and is recovering at home.
It’s believed that the person, an avid walker, may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking their dog along the Truckee River Corridor north of Highway 50 or the Tahoe Keys area in South Lake Tahoe. Health officials started investigating the situation after being notified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
South Lake Tahoe police investigating road rage-related stabbing

On August 14 at approximately 10:06 p.m., several calls were made to 911 about the stabbing on Tallac Avenue near the intersection with Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded and found the victim stabbed multiple times.

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit firefighters made good progress last night with assistance from Cal Fire. Accurate mapping has fire at 2.2 acres. Hwy 89 travelers urged to use caution as firefighters continue to mop-up
9:50 p.m. Update: Firefighters are making good progress on the #TallacFire. Hose-lay is completed on left and right flanks. For the safety of firefighters, Highway 89 travelers asked to use caution in the area between Camp Richardson and Emerald Bay as multiple resources are parked on the highway.
Crews working on two lightning caused fires at Lake Tahoe

The Alert Tahoe Fire Camera system was active with fire officials able to zoom in on possible problem areas.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/20/2020 - 4:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a perfect day, at a perfect location, at a perfect celebration to wrap up what wasn't such a perfect senior year of high school.
On Friday afternoon, one by one, the South Tahoe and Mt. Tallac High School seniors stepped out of their decorated cars amidst cheering from teachers and staff. They sent the students onto the red carpet, down the stairs to more cheering, and dancing, and more red carpet, as they made their way onto a ski lift at Sierra-at-Tahoe.
Two upcoming blood drives to offer free COVID-19 antibody testing
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/20/2020 - 1:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the coronavirus pandemic, blood drives have been nonexistent but they are returning to the South Shore in the coming weeks. As a bonus, all of those donations will receive a free COVID-19 antibody screening test.
The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District is hosting a blood drive on June 30 at the Kahle Community Center's Tallac Activity Room from 11:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. To make an appointment, visit HERE.
Illegal campfire at historic site in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/17/2020 - 9:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Firefighters from the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) responded to the report of another illegal campfire in Lake Tahoe, this time at the Tallac Historic Site on June 17.
LTBMU Engine 341 responded and after a careful inspection, the campfire was declared a wildfire named "The Heritage Fire."
The illegal campfire was constructed on top of a dry stump within the foundation of a historic feature at Tallac Point near Kiva Beach.

With daily school work moved online, graduations were moved to a virtual format.
At both South Tahoe High and Mt. Tallac High schools, graduation has been made special by social media acknowledgments, yard signs, and special bags full of gifts.

Cocktails on Brenda's Balcony has become a pandemic social media hit
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/24/2020 - 10:00amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Brenda Simpkins first posted a picture on Facebook of a glass of chardonnay on her balcony with Mt. Tallac in the background, little did she know she would become a much-needed respite in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
She posted that photo on the I Love Lake Tahoe page, gathering hundreds of "likes" and several comments about what her next drink would be. A new fan suggested a Lemon Drop would look nice on the balcony, and so it began.
Virtual Sierra watercolor series of classes taught by South Lake Tahoe artist
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/19/2020 - 9:39amSouth Lake Tahoe artist Gina Stowell will be leading a watercolor series for the Sierra Nevada Alliance that will explore how to draw and watercolor paint the beautiful landscapes, migrating songbirds, and wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada.
This will be done virtually so open to anyone who signs up.
This will be a series of three 90-minute classes held once a week. Participants can either sign up for one class or the series of three classes. Each class costs $20 and the series of three classes is $50.
All proceeds will support the Sierra Nevada Alliance’s work.
Celebrating South Tahoe High's seniors in a socially distancing manner
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/18/2020 - 9:38amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the Class of 2020 having a graduation experience unlike any in history, parents and faculty are trying to still create a remembrance now that traditional graduation ceremonies are canceled.
For South Tahoe High School (STHS), all 226 graduates received yard/window signs over the past few days. Principal Carline Sinkler, teachers, staff, and other volunteers visited each home in South Lake Tahoe with the signs provided by the Barton Foundation.
