Documentary "Ellis" being shown at LTCC Duke Theatre

Event Date:
November 16, 2015 - 7:00pm

The community is invited to a free screening of the short documentary film, Ellis, on Monday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theater.

Following the 14-minute film, Dr. Albert Ponce, the LTCC History and Ethnic Studies assistant professor, will lead a discussion on the current immigration story and how it's changed.

Ellis was shot in the now-abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex in New York City’s harbor, and tells the story of Ellis Island’s early years through the experience of one immigrant who passed through its doors. The film tells the story of the ghosts of America’s past, and the individuals who fled poverty, discrimination, and dictatorships for a chance at a new life. It also eerily foreshadows the plight of those who currently seek the same opportunities and safety in this country and other parts of the world. The film is narrated by Academy Award winner Robert De Niro.

The film’s director, French artist JR, is known for his publicly accessible exhibits found around the world. His most recent installations include a collaboration with the New York City Ballet, and a huge installation on the Panthéon building in Paris.

After the film screening, Dr. Ponce will lead a discussion about the current immigrant story, and how that story has changed over time. For more information about this event, contact Dr. Ponce at (530) 541-4660 ext. 757 or at Ponce@ltcc.edu.
