Three art exhibits to open at Lake Tahoe Community College

Event Date:
September 29, 2016 - 5:00pm

Three new art exhibits will be featured at Lake Tahoe Community College this fall and they will be celebrated with a free artist reception from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Thursday, September 29. Meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments with fellow art lovers.

In the Haldan Gallery (inside the library building), there will be a solo exhibition of paintings by Jesse Wiedel entitled, “End Times Yard Sale.” Wiedel is hosting an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Wiedel was raised in a rural community outside Redding, Calif. After spending his young life navigating the cultural wastelands, he eventually migrated to the big city and received his Bachelor’s degree in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has spent the last 15 years making art in Humboldt County - fertile ground for his interest in human folly and frailties. His paintings can be read as satire, social criticism, or psychological horror. He works mainly in oil paint in a style that is both illusionistic and painterly.

In the Fine Arts Building’s Foyer Gallery, just outside the Duke Theatre, an exhibit of photographs by LTCC photography instructor Jim Grant will be featured. Entitled “Music Through the Camera Lens,” Grant’s exhibit highlights famous musicians who have performed at Harvey’s Casino over the years. Grant is an award-winning photojournalist who has taught at LTCC for 16 years. He teaches digital photography, commercial photography, and photojournalism. He is also a staff photographer for the Nevada Appeal in Carson City and The Record-Courier in Gardnerville. Grant recently won three first place awards and a second place award for his photography in the 2016 Nevada Press Association's Better Newspaper contest.

In the Student Gallery, in the Main Building, the Winner's exhibition will feature LTCC Art Department students who won awards in last spring's Annual Student Art Exhibition. The students will showcase their winning pieces along with some of their new creations.

All three of these exhibits will be open to explore until December 2, 2016. The Haldan Art Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Foyer Gallery and Student Gallery can be accessed Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
