High winds ahead of weekend snow storm in Lake Tahoe

It was a beautiful Thanksgiving Day in South Lake Tahoe, but things are about to change.

Another system is headed into the Lake Tahoe basin on Friday, bringing with it winds 20-30 mph with prolonged wind gusts from 30-55 mph. The wind advisory is in effect from 10:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Waves are expected to be 2-4 feet with the highest ones on the north and east shores.

Active weather pattern in store for Lake Tahoe Basin through weekend

As we start a busy week of travel, three different storms headed to the Lake Tahoe Basin may impact driving conditions. People are driving, flying or taking a train to their Thanksgiving destinations and AAA expects more than 40 million people will drive 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving, the most since 2007.

Some of those travelers are headed to Lake Tahoe though hotel rooms and vacation rentals are still available.

Winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday afternoon for Lake Tahoe

Expect a windy and snowy weekend in South Lake Tahoe! Ski resorts on the South Shore had to postpone opening days, so maybe Mother Nature will be helping them out!

There is a wind advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe in advance of the winter storm headed our way. Expect winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph overnight Friday, increasing Saturday to 20-30 mph and gusts to 55 mph. Ridgetop winds could gust up to 110 mph. Waves on the lake are expected to be 2-5' with the highest on the north and east shore.

The winds subside slightly as a winter storm moves in.

Another chance for snow headed to South Lake Tahoe this weekend

South Lake Tahoe didn't get much of anything from the last storm that passed through, but perhaps another storm coming into the Lake Tahoe basin Saturday might do a little better.

This next storm system is likely to produce weather impacts for the eastern Sierra and western Nevada this weekend according to the National Weather Service. Snow levels could drop to 6500-7000 ft.

Thursday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Friday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Identity of pedestrian killed in South Lake Tahoe accident released

The man killed as he crossed Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on November 5, 2016 has been identified as 58-year-old Daniel Wallace Curry of Carson City, Nev.

A delay in release of the victim's name was due to the El Dorado County Coroner's Office having trouble locating the next of kin.

Curry was attempting to cross the roadway outside of a crosswalk near Heavenly Village Way at 10:40 p.m. when he was hit by a 61-year-old female Blackjack Taxi driver.

The accident doesn't appear to be alcohol or drug related. There have been no citations or arrests.

Ready for a drop in temperatures and some snow?

Winds will be increasing during the day Tuesday, with wind gusts growing from 15 to 25 mph in the morning to gusts of 45 mph by late in the afternoon afternoon and peaking to 50 mph as the storm enters the basin.
