Two South Lake Tahoe teens arrested for alleged kidnapping and beating; Third sought

Two 18-year-old girls turned themselves into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on Friday evening after they became aware of a warrant out for their arrest on charges of kidnapping and battery.

According to SLTPD, Christina Barnhart and Lily Brooks and a third teen are suspected of forcing themselves into an apartment in the 3600 block of Spruce Avenue on Tuesday, February 28 and pulling the occupant out by her hair, and then dragging her outside where they allegedly kicked and punched the victim.

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Capt. Mark Wygant sentenced to 10 years in prison

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Captain Mark McLeod Wygant was sentenced in U.S. District Court today to 10 years in prison for transportation of child pornography

Wygant, 46, plead guilty in December.

Following an FBI and SLT Police Department investigation, Wygant was a
arrested on Jan. 29 2015 and has been in custody ever since. He had been immediately placed on administration leave but resigned just days after his arrest.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A fugitive pot plant trimmer suspected in the robbery and brutal killing of an operator of a commercial marijuana farm in Mendocino County was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Friday afternoon.

Man arrested after allegedly assaulting a South Lake Tahoe police officer and stealing his baton

A South Lake Tahoe man is sitting in the El Dorado County jail after being arrested on suspicion of several charges including headbutting a police officer, grabbing his baton and trying to also grab his weapon.

37-year-old Richard David Castello is being held on $192,500 bail for taking an officer's weapon, obstruction of justice and battery on a peace officer.

Men wanted for questioning in theft of over 100 battery cores from Douglas County Walmart

Two men are wanted for questioning in two recent thefts at the Walmart on Topsy Lane in the Carson Valley. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the thefts which occurred on January 30 and February 20.

In both cases, two male subjects stole used vehicle battery cores from a fenced area near the automotive service department. At this time it is believed that over 100 battery cores were taken between the two thefts.

Carson Valley Middle School student arrested for threatening to "shoot up the school"

A 12-year-old student was arrested on Thursday evening after making threats to bring a gun to Carson Valley Middle School on Friday February 17 and “shoot up the school.”

At 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a call after a concerned parent intercepted the threatening message sent to their child. Deputies responded to the Indian Hills residence of the reporting party and met with the parent to examine the phone in which the threat was received.

Carson City, law enforcement agencies investigate new information in threats against local judge

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and several law enforcement agencies are investigating new information related to threats made against a Carson City judge, Sheriff Ken Furlong said Thursday.

On Wednesday, Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives and Department of Public Safety investigators received information that an inmate at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Detention Center was being held on a 2011 felony contempt of court warrant out of Carson City.

South Lake Tahoe is a community of diverse backgrounds reaching around the world, and with President Trump's current dialog on immigration, concerns are arising among immigrants who call Tahoe home, and from those that represent them in the area.

The current enrollment of Lake Tahoe Unified School District shows 42.4 percent are Hispanic, 3.6 percent Filipino, 1.2 percent Asian, 48.1 percent white and the rest of other nationalities.

Carson City and Douglas law officers arrest three in connection to recent home burglaries

Detectives from Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked a joint investigation Wednesday involving multiple residential burglaries between the two counties. Three men were arrested as a result of the investigation, a law enforcement captain said.

The investigation, publicly announced earlier Wednesday, led detectives to Dayton where two suspects were located in possession of a large amount of stolen property from several burglaries, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brian Humphrey.

El Dorado County man sentenced for attack on Lassen Park Ranger

Nicholas Martin Coberley, 45, of Pollock Pines, will be spending the next 27 months in prison for assault with a deadly weapon on a park ranger.

Arrest made in Douglas County attempted residential burglary

A suspect was arrested two days after the Douglas County Sheriff's Office circulated the photo of a person of interest in an attempted residential burglary in Gardnerville.

On January 19 at 3:00 p.m., Joshua Gutierrez, 25, of Gardnerville was arrested at his place of business in Douglas County. During the arrest, a box of collectibles, coins and currency that didn't belong to the suspect was located in Gutierrez's vehicle.

What first appeared to be a case of a 16-year-old high school student bringing a loaded firearm onto campus Thursday quickly turned into a murder investigation.

At 8:00 a.m. January 19, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified that a student at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs had been detained for bringing a loaded firearm onto campus. Upon deputies arrival at the school, they placed the student under arrest for the possession of the firearm.

SWAT team arrests Douglas County man for violent attack

A Gardnerville street was closed Tuesday afternoon as deputies, SWAT and crisis negotiation teams from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) served an arrest and search warrant at the home of a domestic violence suspect on Centerville Lane.

At 8:00 p.m. the previous night, on January 2, 2017, DCSO deputies found a partially clothed woman running down the lane. She had been badly beaten and her hands had been bound. She had been the victim of a violent domestic battery.

Police make arrest in South Lake Tahoe drive by shooting

Kevin Gonzales, an 18-year-old local man, has been arrested in connection with a drive by shooting that occurred on December 28 at the Pioneer Inn in South Lake Tahoe.

Gonzales was arrested two days later after an investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was launched into the shooting which took place at 10:00 p.m. at the motel, located on Pioneer Trail.

Douglas County kidnapping, assault and robbery suspect arrested

A 28-year-old suspect in the alleged December 14 assault, kidnapping and robbery of a man in Gardnerville, Nev., has been arrested in Yerington.

At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) investigators and Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Francisco “Frankie” Perez at a residence on North West Street without incident.

Minors with alcohol at SnowGlobe biggest problem for law enforcement

The 2016 South Lake Tahoe three-day long music festival, SnowGlobe, is over, and the thousands of of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans are headed home after enjoying themselves during the outdoor concert. Like with most festivals of this type, most of the arrests and citations issued by South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were for underage drinking.

Early tabulations show that during SnowGlobe this year there were 238 arrests, 148 of those were citations to minors in possession of alcohol.

Law enforcement and hospital kept busy with SnowGlobe issues

Fans of electronic music flock to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field. An estimated 15,000 tickets have been sold for the three-day event which is held on the South Lake Tahoe community's newly created ball fields.

Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, drinking and illegal drugs.

Two-hour standoff with deputies ends peacefully in Incline Village

An Incline Village man is behind bars Friday after being involved in a two-hour standoff with deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at a residence on Winding Way.

At 10:45 a.m., deputies were called out to the home on a call of a family disturbance, and that 28-year-old Shane Donovan had barricaded himself in a bedroom and was acting extremely erratically.

Donovan voiced threats against himself and law enforcement officers on the scene. He further indicated that he may have rigged the entry way to the room with explosives.

Man arrested in connection with death of El Dorado County infant

An investigation by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office into the death of a six-week-old infant has resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man.

Michael Swope is behind bars at the jail in Placerville and being held on one million dollars bail after his arrest on Thursday, December 29 at 3:20 p.m. on second-degree murder and assault charges.

The infant’s mother has been cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation and is not considered a suspect.

No other details have been released.

Law enforcement prepares for thousands of revelers at Stateline

Law enforcement is preparing for the annual New Year's Eve party held at Stateline, an outdoor that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets.

Though Highway 50 through Stateline hasn't had to close until just before midnight the past two years, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is prepared to close it to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

Sheriff's office looking for Douglas High vandals

Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is looking for the suspect(s) responsible for the breaking of windows and other vandalism at Douglas High during the early morning hours of December 21.

The suspect is described as approximately 5’11 to 6 feet, wearing dark clothing, dark gloves and shoes, and a camouflage colored hat with matching face mask. During the crime is carrying a black or dark blue “Jan Sport” backpack with a suede bottom.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office warns of more telephone scams

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office received a number of reports this week from persons who say they received phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and stating that the potential victim has “law enforcement issues” which need to be taken care of financially.

Pair accused of robbery, assault and kidnapping in Douglas County

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is still looking for one suspect in the alleged assault, kidnapping and robbery of a man in Gardnerville on December 14, 2016.

The adult male victim contacted DCSO and reported that two people had violently attacked him in a home in the 1500 block of Gilman Avenue, held him at gunpoint, and then drove him to a bank where he was forced to remove an undisclosed amount of cash. They later released the victim.

Investigators had determined that Stacy Conti-Salway, 35, and Francisco “Frankie” Perez, 28, are responsible for the crime.

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Captain Mark McLeod Wygant, 46, pleaded guilty in federal court today to transportation of child pornography.

Following an FBI and SLT Police Department investigation, Wygant was a
arrested on Jan. 29 2015 and has been in custody ever since. He had been immediately placed on administration leave but resigned just days after his arrest.

"I am pleased that Mr. Wygant plead guilty to his crime and the punishment will now in the hands of the criminal justice system," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

El Dorado Hills tax preparers headed to jail for $1.8 million in fake claims

An unlicensed El Dorado county tax preparer was sentenced Friday to 3 1/2 years in prison and ordered to pay $1,895,833 in restitution for conspiring to file false claims and filing false claims. Her co-conspirator will be sentenced next week.

Barbara Antonucci, 49, and her co-conspirator, Sherry Taggart, 56, of El Dorado Hills, prepared tax returns for clients seeking to maximize their refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.

Suspects sought in beating and robbery of elderly Gardnerville man

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating suspects in a home invasion robbery and beating of an elderly man in the Gardnerville Ranchos on October 30.

The violent crime occurred at 12:38 a.m. when the victim was awakened by the unknown masked suspects forcing their way into his Kimmerling Road home where he lives alone.

Approximately four masked subjects entered the residence, held down the elderly victim and demanded to know the whereabouts of his valuables. The elderly victim, who is in poor health, was beaten unconscious.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office seeks public's help in catching purse thief

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying a person of interest in the theft of purses in two separate incidents in Stateline on October 22, 2016.

In a press release today, DCSO said two different victims used the restrooms at both MontBleu and Harrah's Tahoe between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Within minutes, both women could not locate their purses.

Suspect arrested in South Lake Tahoe food contamination crime

A South Lake Tahoe man is behind bars tonight after being arrested as the suspect in a food contamination case at Raley’s in the Village Center near Stateline.

On Tuesday, November 22, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrested 43-year-old Harry Dally at his residence and booked him into county jail on a single felony count of intentionally dispensing a contaminating substance capable of causing death or injury on food items for human consumption. At this time he is only charged with the crime at the Hot Wok inside of Raley’s. His bail has been set at $100,000.

Alleged sales of marijuana edibles at Douglas High leads to arrest and hospital visit

One student at Douglas High School in Minden was arrested along with a nearby resident after allegedly selling marijuana laced Rice Krispie treats on school groups which led to one student needing medical treatment.

On November 3 an investigation began after a student complained of feelings of anxiety and an accelerated heart rate. She said she may have eaten a Rice Crispy square laced with marijuana earlier in the day and named another female student as the person who brought the edible marijuana to school.

The ill student was taken to a medical facility for treatment by her parent.

US Coast Guard has record year in drug seizures - $5.6 billion worth

With a growing cocaine problem, not only in South Lake Tahoe but in the whole country, the U.S Coastguard and their interagency partners are being kept busy seizing the drug from ships in the Pacific Ocean headed to the United States.

The Coast Guard broke records over the last 12 months by removing more than 416,000 pounds of cocaine worth over $5.6 billion from boats and ships. Their previous record was 367,700 pounds seized in 2008.

New phone scam targeting Douglas County residents

Several reports of attempted fraud were reported to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office on Monday, but none of the targeted recipients paid any money to the scammer.

An unknown male called all of the potential victims, claiming to be Lt. Mike Sharp with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Caller IDs identify the phone number as (775) 375-5858, located in Winnemucca, Nevada. They were all told they owe money in regard to a civil case #6120-NV-8901.

Man wanted in Sacramento triple homicide may be in Reno area

Law enforcement officers in the Reno-Sparks area are looking for a man wanted in connection to a triple homicide in Sacramento on October 15.

Jerod Watson, 52, is a suspect in the murder of his ex-girlfriend's mother and two adult sons. All three had been stabbed multiple times.

Watson fled Sacramento in an SUV that was stopped in Reno, but he was not inside the vehicle.

There is an active arrest warrant for homicide for Watson who is believed to still be in the Reno-Sparks area. He is described as an African American male, 5'10", 180 pounds.

Sheriff seeks suspects who passed counterfeit $100 bills on South Shore

Three men are being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for the allegedly passed counterfeit $100 bills at the CVS pharmacy in Stateline, Nev., on September 30.

Seven counterfeit bills were passed in three separate incidents by the three suspects. The transactions occurred at 12:07 a.m., 4:17 a.m. and 6:24 a.m. In all three incidents the men purchased Visa gift cards in varying amounts and received cash back in change.

At the 12:07 a.m. transaction, the suspect is described as a male, possible Hispanic, in his mid-30’s, wearing a black hat, black sweatshirt.

Another arrest connected to South Lake Tahoe murder

The arrests continue around the country in response to the January, 2016 murder of 40-year-old Dennis Wright at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. In an apparent drug deal gone bad, Wright was shot to death in the motel's parking lot after allegedly bringing 100 pounds of marijuana to town to sell.

Pair accused of abducting their children located in Carson City

A Secret Witness tip has led to the location of Dason Valdez and Krystle Reid, the parents accused of abducting their two children on September 12 after losing custody of their two- and four-year olds.

Just after midnight Thursday morning, the Carson City Sheriff's Office found the pair and arrested Valdez on a Carson City warrant and they released Reid at the scene. Charges against both are pending in Douglas County but the arrest is based on an previous warrant.

Authorities look for pair involved in abduction of two Douglas County children

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is looking for the two parents involved in the Monday evening abduction of two children from their grandparent's home in the northern portion of the county.

On September 12, 2016 at approximately 5:10 p.m., Dason Valdez,29, and Krystle Reid, 27, were allegedly involved in a domestic incident with Valdez’s mother at an address in the Indian Hills subdivision.
